EXCLUSIVE: Queensland Roar came agonisingly close to capturing Sydney FC new boy Stuart Musialik with the midfielder admitting it had been a close call.
Although delighted to have pinned his colours to the light blue mast, the Olyroo has revealed that Brisbane not Melbourne was his other potential destination.
Victory had been rumoured to have all but secured his services but not so according to Sydney’s new number eight.
In the end, it seems Sydney’s high profile recruitment drive helped sway the player’s decision and say ‘thanks but no thanks’ to Frank Farina.
Musialik told au.fourfourtwo.com: “Queensland came in with a very good offer.
"Frank Farina’s a top bloke and a top coach so that option looked very attractive. I really had to think very hard before coming to the decision that I did.
“But the side being assembled here at Sydney had a lot to do with it. I’ve played with Bridgey for the last three or four years for example and I love playing with him."
He added: “You’ve got quality at the back in people like Tony Popovic but as a midfielder, seeing a front line which has Aloisi, Bridge and Brosque in it, is very exciting.
“I’m looking to have a big year next season. Even though we won the grand final, which was fantastic, it was a disappointing season personally.
“I just came to the decision that this was the best place for me to achieve what I want to achieve.”
Regardless of the financial issues at former club the Jets, Musialik feels the time was right to move on from Gary Van Egmond’s side.
He said: “I’m now out of my comfort zone. There’ll be no special treatment, no pampering. I’ll have to fend for myself and hopefully that will bring the best out of me.”
Sydney coach John Kosmina has already stressed that he feels Musialik is capable of providing a more attacking threat as well as excelling in a holding role.
The player himself agrees with that and wants to add a touch of goal power to his game. He said: “Kossie thinks I’m capable of banging a few more goals in. It’s something I really want to work on.
“If I can develop my game while contributing four or five goals a season then it’s only going to better my career.
“I’m just looking forward to getting out there and pushing on.”
