The Sky Blues are undefeated and top of the table, 11 points clear of second-placed Melbourne Victory, who they saw off 2-1 on Australia Day.

Zullo said the drive internally was extremely strong after falling short at the final hurdle of the FFA Cup to Melbourne City in November.

He was involved with City last season where his former team fell short of finishing first and losing 4-1 to Adelaide United away in the Semi-Final.

The former Dutch-based defender reflected on his achievements to date and wanted to add a trophy at the end of this season.

“I’ve ticked a lot of boxes and dreams I’ve wanted to achieve in football, I’ve been lucky enough to do that,” Zullo told FourFourTwo.

“I’ve started off by playing professionally coming through the state league, not through a system like most players in Australia.

“The next one was playing for the youth Australian teams, playing overseas was a big dream of mine, the national team.

Zullo in action for FC Utrecht

“The one thing that I’m really hungry to do is win a title. Overseas I remember watching a lot of games in Australia and reflecting on the fact that I hadn’t won anything and these players were back here winning stuff.

“That’s something which really burns strongly inside of me, that’s what drives me in each and every game. I’m not in it for personal accolades or anything like that, I want to win a title.”

Zullo spoke highly of the team chemistry and felt the flexibility of the squad was reflected in their position on the table.

Dutch defender Jordy Buijs made his debut on Australia Day, which had Zullo heaping praise on the 28-year-old.

Zullo remembered coming up against Buijs in the Eredivisie who played with NAC Breda and SC Heerenveen in his time with Utrecht.

The left-back said his team took plenty of confidence from the Big Blue win.

“There’s just a general feeling in this team right now, we can’t get beat,” he said.

“We went down 1-0 against Victory in an atmospheric stadium away from home. Australia doesn’t realise how much of a big deal it is playing away, in their stadium and their fans and the conditions.

“Going down, with all the things that happened, we still came back and won 2-1. It might not have been our vintage football we have played this year but we found a way to win.

Zullo and captain Brosque share a hug

“It’s a pretty unique feeling I have this year, even when we’re not playing well we’re still winning. Everyone is working themselves into the ground, not just for themselves but their teammates.

“It’s a really unique feeling to have that trust with one another. It seems as though successful teams seem to say the same things a lot because that’s how it is, job’s not done.”

Zullo also praised captain Alex Brosque in a team bursting with leadership qualities

“When you’re out there you look across the park and you’ve got leaders everywhere,” Zullo said.

“Every single player out there could be the captain really and we have an amazing captain as well. He’s an unbelievable leader.

“That can’t be overestimated, it’s so important and he’s a big reason to why we’ve gone so well.”

Sydney face Brisbane Roar away on Friday night, however Zullo will be absent from the line up after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season when he clashed with Marco Rojas on Thursday.
