Neill, 34, had been one of six final nominees for the top prestigious award after his achievements with UAE club Al Jazira and the Australian national team.

However, the Australian defender missed out on the final shortlist with Ulsan Hyundai's Lee Keun-Ho, Iranian veteran Ali Karimi and Zheng Zhi of China making the final cut.

Neill, who currently plays with Al Wasl, had admitted in the UAE press earlier in the week he had been surprised by his nomination.

"I was surprised when I found out, but at the same time extremely proud and humbled that I could be recognised among some really top Asian players," Neill told Sport360°.

The final announcement will be made at a grand ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on November 29.
