AUSSIE ABROAD: Socceroo captain Lucas Neil was the unlikely hero for Al Jazira in their enthralling 4-3 victory away to Ajman at the Shaikh Rashin bin Saeed Stadium.
Two goals in two minutes from Ibrahima Toure and Karim Kerkar handed Ajman a 2-0 lead heading into the interval before Bare pulled a goal back for Al Jazira two minutes into the second half. Goals from Abdullah Mousa and Juma Abdullah levelled proceedings with sixteen minutes left on the clock.
The comeback was completed when Neil found the back of the net in the 84th minute to maintain Al Jazira’s three-point lead at the summit of the UAE Football League.
Elsewhere in the United Arab Emirates, Mark Bresciano led Al Nasr to a convincing 4-0 win at home to Al Ahli. Goals from Careca, Humaid Abdulla Abbas and Younis Ahmad set the tone before Bresciano rounded off the win with a 82nd minute goal.
Brett Holman’s AZ Alkmaar extended their lead at the top of the Eredivisie with a 2-0 win against Utrecht at the AFAS Stadion.
The match had an Aussie feel with Michael Zullo and Adam Sarota featuring for the Utrecht. Socceroo Michael Zullo put in a full shift while Adam Sarota was introduced with sixteen minutes remaining. Teammate and fellow Aussie, Tommy Oar was an unused substitute in the defeat.
In the Eerste Divisie, Former Adelaide Olympic defender Ryan Marveggio did not feature off the bench as Telstar ended their run of four consecutive losses thanks to a hard fought 3-2 win over cellar-dwellers, AGOVV at the Fly Brazil Stadion. Next weekend Telstar welcome Sparta Rotterdam to the TATA Steel Stadion.
Over in the Bundesliga, Matthew Leckie was not in the Borussia Monchengladbach squad that made light work of Koln, 3-0. The former Adelaide United player has been in the reserve team of late.
