The Australian veteran stepped up for his spotkick with Al Jazira having the chance to level the shootout at 3-3 after Al Ahli's Jairo Palomino had smashed his penalty into the woodwork.

However, Neill fluffed his spotkick, allowing Al Ahli's Victor Simoes to subsequently step up and clinch the victory 4-2 and a place in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, in a thrilling contest, Marcelo Camacho put the Saudi club ahead on 22 minutes after Neill failed to clear his lines.

However, Ricardo Oliveira levelled 10 minutes later and then Matias Delgado put the Group A winners ahead on 62 minutes.

Omani substitute Amad Al Hosni would equalise with 15 minutes to play before further goals in extra-time from Ricardo Oliveira and Victor Simoes. Eventually Neill's penalty miss would prove decisive.

After the game, Al Ahli boss Karel Jarolim said his side targetted Al Jazira's defence and Neill.

“We have studied Al Jazira well and this helped us to win against them,” Jarolim told reporters.

“We knew that they have a strong attack, but at the same time they are not good on the defensive side and we used this to get back into the game more than once."
