Craig Bellamy returned to Liverpool on transfer deadline day in a surprise move from Manchester City. Here, Press Association Sport looks at other memorable cases of players going back to old clubs.
MARK HUGHES
Welshman Hughes scored 37 goals in 89 games for the Red Devils but was surprisingly sold to Barcelona in 1986. The Catalan team, led by Terry Venables, were hoping Hughes would form a deadly partnership with Gary Lineker but he failed to impress and after a brief spell at Bayern Munich, was sold back to Manchester United. In his second spell, under Sir Alex Ferguson, he won two Premier League trophies, two FA Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
ROBBIE KEANE
Signed for Tottenham by Glenn Hoddle for £7million from Leeds, Keane spent six years in north London before Liverpool came calling. After an almost obsessive pursuit, Rafael Benitez got his man in 2008 for a fee of £19million. Keane said he was ecstatic at signing for his favourite team but only lasted six months at Anfield as Benitez admitted Keane did not settle at the club. Harry Redknapp brought the striker back to Tottenham for £12million that same season, though he was only used sparingly in his second spell and was loaned out to both Celtic and West Ham before leaving for good this summer.
TEDDY SHERINGHAM
Sheringham made an impressive start for Tottenham after his move from Nottingham Forest to north London. His goalscoring nous and all-round ability saw him establish himself as a favourite at White Hart Lane but in 1997 left for Manchester United in a bid to win major silverware. While there, the Londoner got what he wanted with his successful spell culminating in the famous 1999 treble. In 2001 he opted to leave, returning to Spurs for a two-year spell which saw him score 22 goals.
ROBBIE FOWLER
Local boy Fowler left Liverpool for Leeds for £12million in 2001 after losing his regular place under Gerard Houllier. The former PFA young player of the year remained a legend with the Kop, who had nicknamed him 'God', and after an entertaining spell with big-spending Leeds, he moved to Manchester City where he managed only 20 goals in 80 games. In 2006 he made a free transfer switch to Liverpool, where he received a hero's welcome and made a decent contribution during his six-month stint.
