FFA CEO Ben Buckley says delaying a second Sydney A-League franchise was still being looked at as the clock ticks on Sydney Rovers while other investors were also on the radar.
The current Ian Rowden-backed west Sydney Rovers bid - who were granted the licence a year ago despite not having the money - have until the end of the month to come up with the cash to compete in next season's A-League.
However that leaves precious little lead in time even if they - or any other group - do come up with the cash in time.
Speaking at today's announcement of a new ownership structure at Newcastle, Buckley said that FFA were exploring all their options but said they were committed to a team based in the west.
"It's looking to see if there are other potential investors or other potential models," he said when quizzed about Rovers apparent lack of funds.
"We've had some discussions with some parties who will put forward some plans but I can't really comment whether they will come to fruition or not.
"A team in western Sydney has to be successful and if that means we have to delay it, our intent is still to have a team there."
