Perth-born Lowry decided earlier this week that he would represent Australia after playing representative football at underage level for Ireland. Now with the World Cup in mind, he is seeking regular first-team football, and is a chance to get it at the Pilgrims, who are currently languishing at the bottom of the table.

Injuries to Benin international Reda Johnson and Wales Under-21 left-back Darcy Blake have left manager Paul Sturrock short on defensive options, so he has called on Lowry to help fill the breach.

"Defensively, we are very short and we need to make sure we have players coming in," Sturrock told Argyle's official website.

"Shane has got real potential and he wants to do well."

Lowry was recommended to Sturrock by Irish pair Alan Judge and Cillian Sheridan, who are both on loan deals at the club.

"He has played with Alan and Cillian in the Republic of Ireland Under-21 side, and they have waxed lyrical about him," Sturrock said.

"Our scouts have also given us some very good reports, so he is a welcome addition."

Lowry could make his debut on Saturday against Newcastle at St James' Park.
