With 33 year-old club legend Henrique starting up front, the Roar were visibly blunted in attack, unable to get anyone on the end of deliveries coming from Brisbane’s midfield quartet.

Likewise, the Jets spent much of the first-half huffing and puffing before NPL star Kane Shepherd stepped up to neatly finish from Georgievski’s low cross in first-half stoppage time.

The Jets continued to push in the second half, sealing the game with a controversial winner after Matt Mckay was seemingly fouled at the other end of the pitch.

Referee Kurt Ams decided the late contact was not in fact a foul, allowing Petratos to spearhead a 3 v 2 attack, waiting to draw out the defender before laying off to Jair, who smashed the ball passed an exposed Jamie Young.

The goal is Jair’s first for the club, and his first personal goal in 15 months.

The win sees the side from the Hunter climb into the top six, while the Roar fall one spot into ninth position, just three points clear of the bottom of the table with a game against the in-form Victory looming in just five days time.

NEWCASTLE JETS

Glen Moss- 8

Made one key save in the 17th minute, but was largely untroubled for the rest of the match.

Daniel Georgievski- 9

Instrumental in the build-up for Newcaslte’s first goal, and provided a great outlet down the right flank all match.

Nigel Boogard- 8

Passing can be a little wild at times, clearly thinks he’s the David-Luiz of the A-League. Dealt with the Roar attackers with ease.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley- 8

Not pretty football but got the job done. Too strong for Henrique, regularly bullying him off the ball. Like Boogard, Nikolai’s passing was also occasionally wayward, however with no major repercussions.

Ivan Vujica- 7

Sloppy on the ball at times with a pass accuracy of 71%, however the left back did create two meaningful chances.

Steven Ugarkovic- 7

Kept the Jets midfield ticking over, completing 38 passes and hardly missing a target all game. Spurned a good opportunity in the 31st minute after a great ball from Jair.

Ben Kantarovski- 7

Does the dirty work well, and doesn’t make a big deal of himself. Had a lot of success passing into the gaps in the Roar defensive unit.

Ronald Vargas- 8

A late inclusion, initially not named in the squad. Showed glimpses of the mesmerising skills A-League fans witnessed before his leg-break last season and made a meaningful contribution to the Jets' attacks.

Jair- 8

Finally scored his first goal since September 2017 and his first ever for the Jets, sealing the match with a neat finish into the top right corner after a Petratos counter-attack.

Kaine Sheppard- 8.5

The Englishman was isolated at times but showed good hold-up play to involve the oncoming midfielders. Beautiful outside of his left foot finish to put the Jets up 1-0. Will be good competition for O’Donovan once his suspension is finally complete.

Dimi Petratos- 8

Often lacking his trademark arrogance and confidence, but was at the heart of the counter-attack that lead to the Jets’ second and decisive goal. Started to dominate more in the second half after Vargas and Jair were subbed out.

SUBS

Nick Cowburn- n/a

Replaced Jair in the 78th minte.

Mitch Austin- 6

Replaced Vargas in the 74th minute. Was the beneficiary of numerous Jets counter-attacks deep in stoppage time, however none lead to goals.

Matthew Ridenton- 6

Replaced Sheppard in the 65th minute. Fluffed a brilliant opportunity for a third goal, comically tripping over the ball from 5 meters out.

BRISBANE ROAR

Jamie Young- 7

Not at fault for either goal, let down by a lackluster defence. Unusually sloppy distribution, turning the ball over on multiple occasions.

Jack Hingert- 6.5

Pushed up high and left exposed on the counter-attack. Unable to find a quality delivery into the box, but not helped by a lack of targets to cross to.

Daniel Bowles- 6

Lucky not to be sent off. Compensated for his lack of technical ability through overly physical challenges and shirt-tugging. Replaced by Jacob Pepper after a knock to the head.

Avraam Papadopoulos- 8

Safe to say he enjoys a slide tackle or two, yet he executed almost every tackle to perfection, and can hold his head up high on a disappointing day for his side.

Connor O’Toole- 7

Got into good attacking positions without much end product and only ended up delivering one successful cross all afternoon.

Thomas Kristensen- 7

As per usual the Dane was central to everything Roar did in attack. However the lack of a target-man hurt the midfielder, who was unable to find the incisive passes.

Matt Mckay- 7

Looked out of ideas without Taggart to play off. The captain tried hard all game but will be very disappointed with his side.

Alex Lopez- 6

Kept quiet by the Jets' midfielders, and lacked quality with his deliveries into the box.

Tobias Mikkelsen- 7

Solid passing radar. Unable to unlock the Jets defence with any key passes.

Eric Bautheac- 6

Couldn’t find the killer ball in attack but worked hard defensively. Bautheac’s intensity faded as the game went on and he looked distinctly frustrated towards the end of the match.

Henrique- 6

Still has good feet but lacks the physicality required to go up against Boogard and Topor-Stanley. Showed his experience to win fouls against stronger defenders early on, but fitness got the better of the 33 year old in the second half.

SUBS

Jacob Pepper- n/a

Replaced Bowles in the 79th minute.

Adam Taggart- 6

Replaced Matt Mckay in the 70th minute. Was a surprise inclusion given he had a slight hamstring tear going into the match.

Dylan Wenzel-Halls- 7

Replaced Mikkelsen in the 59th minute. Ran hard for over 30 minutes, including a brilliant defensive chase down in stoppage time.
