It was the moment that Newcastle's first home Grand Final will always be remembered for. The moment VAR proved that sometimes, the pursuit of perfection is a horrible waste of time.
Melbourne Victory's winning goal in their 1-0 Grand Final victory against the Jets was found to be offside, with James Donachie taking up an offside position from Victory's free kick.
The commentators, those watching at home and many in the crowd could see the defender was offside, but due to a technical glitch in the VAR studio, that camera angle couldn't be broadcast to the surveying referee.
As a result the goal stood, the Big V won the match and VAR, which had drawn significant criticism throughout the season, once again had to be defended by FFA.
“We are extremely disappointed at this failure of the VAR technology,” A-League boss Greg O’Rourke said in a statement following the match.
"We understand the disappointment and frustration of the Newcastle Jets, their fans and indeed all football fans.
“Whilst we understand that this happened only once this season it was at a most critical time. All parties desire the technology to be failure proof and that is what we will be striving for.”
This hasn't proved enough consolation for Newcastle players Ronny Vargas and Daniel Georgievski, who took to Instagram to voice their outrage.
“We are not making excuses because excuses are for sore losers. We are just expressing our voice so that this doesn’t happen again," the pair wrote.
“If a referee makes a mistake you can accept this because we are human beings and we make mistakes.
"But when there is technology that can correct a human beings mistake and can use all the time it needs to correct a decision and it still manages to make a mistake and again uses excuses, this is something that a simple ‘Sorry’ just won’t do and it can not be accepted.
“Especially when that mistake can affect a lot of players careers where they possibly might not have the same opportunity again to be in the position to win a title.
"They should take this into consideration when they believe that that simple ‘Sorry’ can ever be accepted by any player/coach/staff/club etc.”
