Mitch Nichols returns to face his former club Brisbane Roar tonight and the midfielder says victory is vital for Western Sydney to finally kick-start their A-League campaign.
The Wanderers have only managed two victories in the first 11 rounds of the season. Nichols, who hails from the Gold Coast, spent six successful seasons at Roar where he claimed a Premiership and two Championships.
The 27-year old is looking to taking on his old club.
"It's always good going back to Brisbane," he said. "I've got plenty of friends and family who will come out to watch the game.
"We need to put a good performance back in, get a win and really get our season going. Everybody knows about their home form, it's a tough away trip.
"But I think we had the better of the game here so we need to take that in and keep the ball. We know they'll come out and press and if we can beat that press and exploit the space that they leave at home, then we can be really dangerous against them."
Western Sydney are coming off a 2-2 draw with Wellington, their sixth draw of the 2016/17 season. Nichols knows the Wanderers can't afford to do the same against Brisbane.
"Probably when we went 2-0 up, we let our foot off a little bit and let them back in," he admitted.
"We can't switch off for a five, 10 minute period. But we finished the game well, we had chances to win it.
"It's been the story of our season so it's really about taking the positives out of it and taking that to Brisbane. Our game-management needs to be smarter.
"We need to make them work. They're going to open up and leave spaces, if we can limit their chances when we're ahead then that's going to make it difficult for them."
Nichols scored his goal of the season against Phoenix and is hoping for more. He has scored 38 goals in his A-League career.
"I've haven't had my shooting boots on this season so hopefully that can continue," he said.
"But more importantly it's about us getting a win and kick-starting our season."
Nichols feels Western Sydney need to believe in their methods and system and the results will come. The NSW side currently sits in seventh spot on the ladder but on equal points as fifth-placed Newcastle Jets and sixth-placed Perth Glory.
"We really just have to keep believing in what we're doing," the former Victory and Glory attacker said.
"If we go to Brisbane and do what we're capable of, and do what we've been doing and limit the mistakes we've been punished for, and get our season going again, we can get on a good roll.
"We've not really been outplayed this year so we've got to keep believing and there's still two-thirds of the season to go.
"We do have time but we don't want to be talking about this in a month's time or anything."
