Off-contract Western Sydney midfielder Mitch Nichols says he won’t just jump at any European opportunity as he ponders a key decision on his playing future.
The 27-year-old is content at Wanderers but has never played in Europe and is keen to try to win a contract abroad this off-season when he’ll be a free agent.
Nichols and agent Buddy Farah have put off Wanderers contract talks for now, with a view to exploring their overseas options.
His only overseas experience was six months on loan with Japanese club Cerezo Osaka in 2014, while in 2012 he almost joined Danish club Randers, where Farah has since brokered deals for Jack Duncan and Mustafa Amini.
“I’m at that age now where you sit down and think about whether you go overseas and go to Asia or see what’s on the table when it comes about,” Nichols told FourFourTwo.
“I’ve been really happy at the Wanderers over the last few years so we’ll see.
“I think everyone would and should have that desire (to play overseas). It’s really if you’re presented with the opportunity to do it, then you can seriously consider it.
“If someone’s willing to give me the opportunity then I’ll sit down and have a look at it but I wouldn’t go to some places just for the sake of saying I played in Europe.”
The five-time Socceroo reiterated he is content at Wanderers but is intrigued by a new adventure, although he hasn’t put too much thought into it yet nor entertained offers.
Nichols added: “I’m just letting it play out. I’m happy at the Wanderers. We’ll speak at the right time.
“I’d like to stay but I’m just assessing all options once the season is over.
“I want to play out this year and see what comes up.
“Everyone wants to try have a new adventure and something different.
“I’ve not thought about it or talked about it, other than doing interviews.”

Nichols netted 10 goals and was a key influence in midfield in Wanderers’ run to the grand final last season.
He openly said he felt his 2016/17 campaign had been “tough”, particularly having netted only once in the A-League.
The former Brisbane Roar man took some comfort in the fact that he finished with the equal fifth most assists this regular season with seven, while he was third for chances created with 54.
“It’s been tough. A bit like the team, a bit up and down,” he said.
“I would’ve liked to have scored more goals. It really hasn’t happened. We would’ve liked to finish higher. Maybe I haven’t contributed as much as I did last year.
“I’ve probably not taken my moments in front of goal like I have before. I’ve been working really hard to rectify that.
“It’s been a good year, with no injuries and playing most games, but as a whole we would’ve liked to be up near the top.”
Nichols will look forward to taking on his former club when Wanderers face Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night in the A-League elimination finals.
