SYDNEY FC are going out of their way to soften the blow for fans following the announcement that Nicky Carle is heading to the Middle East on a lucrative one-year loan deal.
Club supporters were sent an e-newsletter with a link to a video on the Sky Blues website where the midfielder explained why he took up the offer with United Arab Emeriates side Baniyas on the eve of Season 8.
Citing personal and professional reasons for the move, Carle also indicated that Socceroos selection played a big part in his decision.
He also said: “It means I have extended my stay at Sydney and I’ve got an extra year when I get back which is great news.”
Sydney FC players were ringing fans encouraging them to renew memberships just as news of Carle’s loan deal broke.
But the midfielder had this message for the Sky Blues' faithful worried about the 2012/13 campaign which kicks-off in six weeks: “(You’re) in great hands. Crooky for me has been exceptional. It’s been a great pre-season so far.
"They’ve got an excellent team, they’re a great bunch of boys that will do well this year – I’m very confident about that.”
Hinting at the financial rewards of the move, Carle thanked the club for supporting the deal. “They have given me a great opportunity to help set myself up in life, " he said.
The 30-year-old said he hoped a longer season and more game time would also put him in good stead for Socceroos selection. Carle will be based in Abu Dhabi along with Al Wasl bound national team captain Lucas Neill.
“Obviously being part of the Socceroos is a massive honour,” Carle said. “I’d love to get myself back in there on a regular basis and hopefully the longer season helps with that. Hopefully that helps my claims for a Socceroos spot and keeps me fitter for a longer period of time.”
He added: “When you’re getting to my age, a bit on in your career, you really look at it and say ‘it is a different experience’. Obviously I want to do the best I can over there and I want to enjoy my football.
“I broke myself back into the national team last year and hopefully this can push my claims a bit further.”
Carle saved his final words for the fans. "I want to thank them immensely," he said. "What a great bunch of fans – loyal supporters that are brilliant to play for. I really enjoyed my time in front of them. Rest at ease, I am coming back… I can’t wait to play in front of you again.”
The club will hope Carle's words smooth the ruffled feathers of some fans contemplating whether to renew their memberships. Judging by the reaction on forums and social media sites, however, the Sky Blues will want to have something, or someone, else up their sleeve before the season kicks off.
