WESTERN Conference-leading Los Angeles Galaxy were upset by the struggling New England Revolution while Eastern rivals New York and Columbus were both kept scoreless in Week 15 action.
The Revolution bounced back from a 5-0 thumping last weekend at Real Salt Lake to stifle MLS leading scorer Edson Buddle and score a 2-0 home win over the Galaxy, who rested United States World Cup star Landon Donovan.
Second half goals from Marko Perovic and Kheli Dube gave Steve Nicol's Revs a much-needed victory to halt a three-game losing streak.
Despite their second league defeat of the campaign, the Galaxy remain on top of the West with an MLS-wide best 36 points from 16 games, six ahead of reigning champions Real Salt Lake, who beat Chicago on Thursday night.
In the East, the Columbus Crew stayed top as both they and nearest rivals New York were held to stalemates.
The Crew drew 0-0 at the Houston Dynamo, now winless in seven games, while the New York Red Bulls - five days before they reveal their latest Designated Player signing, tipped heavily to be Thierry Henry - were held 0-0 at home by DC United.
That keeps Columbus two points clear of the Red Bulls on 28 points after 14 games, with a game in hand over New York.
Toronto FC closed the gap on second place to four points with a 1-0 home win over the Colorado Rapids, their first defeat in seven games and extending the Canadians' unbeaten run to eight.
Fuad Ibrahim scored the only goal of the game in the 61st minute.
The Philadelphia Union were beaten for the first time in their new stadium as the San Jose Earthquakes left PPL Park with a 2-1 win having come from behind following Fred's 16th minute opener for the MLS newcomers.
Cornell Glen equalised in the 45th minute before Arturo Alvarez struck in the last minute of the game to grab the three points.
And Chivas USA won for the first time in two months with a 2-0 victory at the Kansas City Wizards, both goals coming in the second half from Justin Braun.
