After being able to keep the nucleus of their double winning squad together, grand final hero Milos Ninkovic believes Sydney FC can be even better this season.
Last term Sydney lost only one game during their premiership and grand final winning campiagns, but historically repating those feats has been a task beyond most A-League teams.
Only Ange Postecouglou's Brisbane Roar in 2010-11, 2011-12 has won back-to-back A-League Championships, while no team has ever won the premiership two seasons in a row let alone the grand final/premiership, double double.
But, Ninkovic believes Sydney FC can prove the doubters wrong and make 2017-18 even greater than last season.
“Most people are probably thinking that we can’t be better than last year,” he said speaking exclusively to FourFourTwo.
“Yes, we had an unbelievable year last year. But we didn’t win the FFA Cup. This year we want to win FFA Cup, the title and the grand final. Then of course we have Champions League and we want to play very, very well in Champions League.
“We have a very good chance to show in the Champions League we are very good team.
"It is going to be difficult but everything is possible if we work hard like we did last season we can be better than last year. Why not?”
While most A-League clubs have had their annual roster clear out, Sydney have maintained most of their double winning side and its why Ninkovic feels the Sky Blues can back up last season’s success.
“Last year we signed five -six new players,” he said. “We had Joshua Brillante, Bobo, Michael Zullo, Alex Wilkinson, and Bernie Ibini and this year we lost very few important players as most of the players stayed.
"So of course, we are understanding each other much better now than one year ago. That’s normal.
“We’ve had some injuries and some players have gone, Vuka (Danny Vukovic) is gone, Filip Holosko is gone and Rhyan Grant is injured and he was a very important player for us last season, like Vuka, like Filip.
“But we have found some very good players. We have a very good squad.
"It is going to be difficult to forget last season because last season was unbelievable. But we need to do that and start like we did last season but it is possible because we work hard and we have started pre-season very well."
With belief gained from last term’s record-breaking campaign, Ninkovic is adamant Graham Arnold's men will continue in that vein.
“I expect that we will play like last year,” he said. “With the confidence. We have a very good squad and we have signed some very good players. We want to just be better.
“Everyone thinks that it is difficult to repeat last year but we want to be better. We want to work even harder than last year. Everything is possible. This is football and if you work hard and there are no injuries – anything is possible in football.”
