The Nix flew out of the blocks, shooting to a two-goal lead inside the first quarter of an hour via goals from Chris Greenacre and Leo Bertos, but in the end were forced to hang on for the victory after Vince Lia saw red and the Fury dragged a goal back.

Herbert, though, felt his side thoroughly deserved the victory.

"Let's not hold back, I think we were by far the better side," he said.

"We had to cope and deal with (the wind) and losing Vinnie. I think it was quiet resilient and there was some good character in the side.

"It won't do us any harm to have gone through that, especially at home."

North Queensland assistant coach Stuart McLaren said he felt the Fury were unlucky to go home empty handed after an improved second-half performance.

"We started very poorly and made two mistakes that cost us the game," he said.

"We were much better in the second half and were a little bit unlucky not to get a point out of it.

"In the early part we were just a little bit slow to react to things and we invited some trouble upon ourselves by perhaps trying to play too much football in the wind and we made a couple of crucial errors."

Wellington's next match is away to Gold Coast on Friday, while the Fury travel to Central Coast next weekend.
