The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president, Ricardo Teixeira, has ruled out the possibility of Romario representing the national team at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year.
On Tuesday, Rio de Janeiro mayor Cesar Maia made public his wish to see the 41-year-old wearing the Verdeamarela shirt and scoring his 1,000th career goal in the July 13-29 tournament.
"It would be marvellous to see Romario scoring that goal in this competition," Maia said.
However, his hopes were dashed on Wednesday when Teixeira told GloboEsporte.com: "We will only use a national Under-17 team."
Under the Pan-American Games ruling it is stipulated that teams are allowed to field an Under-20 team with three older players.
Romario, who has been playing in the Campeonato Carioca - the Rio de Janeiro state championship - for giants Vasco da Gama, needs just one more goal to reach the historic landmark.
