Late Socceroos call-up Jamie Maclaren says he isn’t feel any extra pressure having replaced superstar Tim Cahill in the Australia squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Thailand.
Maclaren wasn’t in Ange Postecoglou’s preliminary 30-man squad for the Thailand match, but was added to the 23-man squad named earlier this week, with Cahill rested.
The Brisbane Roar striker scored his first goal of the A-League season in his fourth game, in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Perth Glory, helping his cause for a recall after making his Australia debut against England in May.
But he insisted he’s feeling no burden of expectation having effectively replaced Australia’s greatest goal scorer in the squad.
“Not at all. We know Tim Cahill is a legend of the game and to compare yourself so early to him is ridiculous,” Maclaren said.
“I’ve just got to keep doing my thing.
“Timmy is a different sort of player than I am. He’s been there and done it, I’m just starting my journey.
“I look up to a guy like him, because he scored goals when Australia’s needed him most.
“Hopefully someday I’ll get my first goal for the Socceroos.”
The 23-year-old admitted when he wasn’t included in Postecoglou’s preliminary squad, he thought his chances were over.
“I’m not going to lie, once you see the 30 you think my chances are probably for March when the next games are,” Maclaren said.
“It’s something I’m really honoured to be a part of.
“I want to build on that one cap I got against England.
“I feel like it’s a good opportunity against Thailand. It’s a must-win game, hopefully I can contribute.”
As for his three-game run without a goal, Maclaren said he was never concerned.
“If I wasn’t creating chances I’d be worried,” he said.
“As a striker, it’s always nice to get that first one.”
