AUSSIE Neil Kilkenny has no regrets as he eyes a Wembley triumph with Leeds United this weekend against the team he rejected back in January.
Only Doncaster Rovers stand between the Olyroo midfielder and a place in next season’s English Championship.
Win or lose in the League One play-off final, the 22-year-old is adamant he made the right choice in joining one of the fallen giants of the game.
He told the Telegraph and Argus: “Doncaster are a good club but I couldn’t turn down Leeds and hopefully we will beat them on Sunday.
“I knew both teams would be close to promotion. Doncaster are a good footballing side. I’ve played against them six times this season already, so this will be the seventh. It might be a record.
“I’ve had two losses, two wins and two draws so it’s all even at the moment. I should know them inside out by now.
“I don’t think the result on Sunday will show whether or not I made the right decision. You get offers and you have to make a choice. It was a hard one but I don’t regret picking Leeds.”
What threatened to be a miserable season has turned out well for Kilkenny who suffered a torrid time at previous club Birmingham City.
He said: “Steve Bruce wouldn't play me and wouldn’t let me go, so the situation was awkward. There was a bit of a difference of opinion but that’s what you get with managers sometimes.
“There was interest from big Championship clubs but he wouldn't let me go. That was his decision. All he said was I don’t want you to play against me.
“I was really down, probably the lowest I could ever be. I begged him to let me go out on loan and he let me go to Oldham.
“When Steve Bruce left Birmingham I saw the chance to get out and Alex McLeish said I could go.”
