This week the former Broadmeadow Magic junior re-sgined with the Jets for another two seasons.

But he concedes he has considered a move away from Newcastle before, when the club faced serious ownership issues in the past and its survival was under threat.

"I almost contemplating moving on for that reason," he said.

However, he has stayed local and under coach Ernie Merrick in the past few years he has probably played the best football of his A-League career.

"Ernie’s brought out a different style in my football," he said.

"I’ve got better with experience and just playing regular football and staying injury-free."

Taking on the captaincy of the Jets is something that would make sense for a local product like Kantarovski one day.

But with the club second from bottom on the table at the moment, his focus is purely on getting Newcastle firing again.

"At the moment, I just want to win as many games and be as successful as possible," the midfielder said.

"If it [the captaincy] happens, it happens."
