Earlier this week, the Mariners announced they would be withdrawing their women's team from the upcoming W-League season due to a lack of funds.

Central Coast's withdrawal prompted Bill Drossos, an advisor/director of Football South Coast on W-League, A-League and FFA relations, to suggest to au.fourfourtwo.com a move could be made by the Stingrays to fill the Mariners' void.

But following a meeting with the FFA head of women's football Leeanne Grantham, Drossos told the Illawarra Mercury the Stingrays wouldn't be entering the W-League.

"The FFA have advised us that this W-League season will remain as a seven-team competition and that they will not be looking to fill the position left vacant by the Central Coast with a South Coast team," Drossos said.

"The FFA are fully aware of the support for women's football on the South Coast and so we have total confidence in their decision-making process with regards to any future expansion of the W-League."

Drossos insisted two W-League games would still be played at Wollongong's WIN Stadium this season, despite the failed proposal.

Sydney FC host Perth Glory at WIN Stadium on November 27 and the Sky Blues also host Melbourne Victory at the same venue on December 11.
