"Look, no excuses, the pitch was a little ordinary. I'm just so glad that we've actually qualified for the next phase [of World Cup qualifiers]," the Socceroo defender told au.fourfourtwo.com after the match.

"These boys that were picked, they play on the ground. We're not a team to knock balls in the air, you know? At times, especially down the wings and in the middle of the park, it [the surface] was horrendous.

"Having to play on that tonight was very difficult. I know people say that both teams have to deal with it but we're playing at home, we want to play great football.

Asked for a solution and the Jets defender said not to play Rugby League games before Socceroo matches would help the national team cause.

"How many games were there before we played? Five or six? It's something we've got to learn from. It's something we have to take into consideration for upcoming games."

And North even said he was worried for some of the players' wellbeing on the tricky surface.

"I was worried at the start there was a bit of loose ground. Just for players' safety. So we've just got to learn from it."

There were two rugby league matches at ANZ stadium on Friday night - St George Illawarra v Penrith in first grade and U/20s - and another two on Saturday night involving the Bulldogs v Canberra Raiders.

Socceroo coach Pim Verbeek echoed similar sentiments to North in his post match comments, saying his comments earlier in the week about the surface were spot on.

"Everyone knows I'm right. The FFA must learn from this situation."

And Socceroo midfielder Mile Jedinak told au.fourfourtwo.com that the pitch required great concentration for the player receiving the ball.

"You had to concentrate a lot when you were receiving a ball. And sometimes you had to take an extra touch which gives the defender that extra time to close you down."

Socceroo debutant David Williams described the wings at ANZ stadium as "pretty terrible".

"The middle of the pitch was fine but it was just hard to control the ball and actually get your feet to take on a player," said the Brondby striker, a 64th minute substitute in the 0-1 loss.
