RECENTLY crowned premiers Bonnyrigg White Eagles open their 2010 NSW Premier League finals series campaign on Saturday evening with one eye on the grand-final as Blacktown City FC visit Bonnyrigg Sports Club.
Arguably the most consistent team in the competition, the White Eagles will be hoping to make the most of the home ground advantage to secure a spot in the grand-final, though the task at hand against Blacktown City FC will be a mammoth challenge.
This matchup promises to be a classic, with the sides exchanging victories in the home-and-away legs this season with Blacktown City victorious by 2-0 in Round 7 - where Tolgay Ozbey and Mitchell Long grabbed the goals - before Bonnyrigg exacted their revenge with a 2-0 win at home in Round 18 - courtesy of late strikes from Nathan Elasi and Brad Boardman.
Blacktown City will unleash young goalkeeper Justin Biega following his positive showings in recent weeks, and the suspension dished out to Brodie Crane who was sent off last weekend against Sydney United. Biega entered the fray at the start of the extra-time period and performed marvelously well, saving a penalty in the shootout triumph.
Coach Aytek Genc will also need to make-do without Matt Pressello in defence, though will be looking at another energetic performance from captain Luke Roodenburg out of midfield and the League's top goalscorer Tolgay Ozbey up front.
Bonnyrigg's weekend off will certainly have Brian Brown's men fresh and ready to go with striker Brad Boardman eager to make it three grand-finals in a row, following the recent two editions with Sutherland Sharks. The White Eagles will also look to explore the set-pieces of maestro Daniel Severino, with the youthful exuberance of David Gullo, along with the experience of Jamie McMaster and Shane Webb certain to provide Bonnyrigg with the entire arsenal required for victory.
With a spot in the grand-final on the line, expect fireworks on Saturday evening in Bonnyrigg.
At Sydney United Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon, Sydney United and A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers' seasons go on the line with the loser in this clash bringing to an end their 2010 NSW Premier League ambitions.
These two sides have produced eleven goals in their two meetings in 2010, the Reds running out 2-0 victors in the Round 8 clash courtesy of a John Kelso own goal, and a fine strike by, now former striker, Mirjan Pavlovic.
The reverse fixture at Leichhardt Oval in Round 19 saw the Tigers claim bragging rights with an emphatic 5-4 victory. Robbie Younis stole the show with a fine hat-trick, with Nick Rizzo and former Tigers player Hirofuni Moriyasu pitching in with a goal. The Reds response arrived via captain Joe Vrkic who twice converted from the penalty-spot, along with a brace from Elsid Barkhousir.
The Tigers run into the finals series has been exceptional, losing only to Marconi in the second-half of the season, meanwhile the Reds have had a slightly bumpier ride.
With a shot at the loser of the Major semi-final on the line, both these sides will need to start the match on the front-foot.
Both outfits have shown their ability to score goals, along with two very versatile midfields, though defensively is where the key may lie in this fixture. The Reds have leaked a number of goals in the second part of the season, meanwhile the Tigers have proven a very strong unit across the backline, constantly frustrating their opponents. Elsid Barkhousir and Luka Glavas will have a big job ahead of them to combat the Tigers defenders, and brick wall in the form of Matthew Nash who has been in exceptional form between the sticks for the Tigers.
Sydney United on the other hand will need their experienced campaigners Joe Vrkic, Damon Collina and Michael Cindric to lift, with the likes of Franco Parisi, Robbie Younis and Nick Rizzo ready to cause havoc in the Reds defensive third.
This fixture certainly has all the ingredients for a memorable encounter, with both sides former NSL teams, and both clubs missing a grand-final victory for a few years now, especially A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers.
