The game, which Nurnberg won 3-1, was delayed for 20 minutes when referee Peter Gagelmann ordered the players off the pitch with half an hour played.

Frankfurt were fined 25,000 euros for failing to prevent the fireworks from being smuggled into their Commerzbank Arena stadium.

A statement released on Tuesday on the German FA's (DFB) official website, www.dfb.de, stated both clubs were punished because of "the lack of safety for the referee, the referee's assistants and the opposition in conjunction with unsporting conduct".

Nurnberg were also warned another serious incident could see them banned from their Frankenstadion, subject to a part exclusion of spectators or forced to play behind closed doors.

Both clubs have accepted their punishments.
