YOUNG Socceroo Tommy Oar scored his first ever Eredivisie goal and provided an assist for another as FC Utrecht defeated Roda JC 3-1 in Holland's top flight on Saturday.
Oar, who has started every game for Utrecht since returning after the Under-20 World Cup, lashed in a goal on 44 minutes with his winless side trailing 1-0.
Daan Bovenberg's long throw into the box fell kindly for Oar who turned his body and fired a powerful shot past Roda keeper Mateusz Prus.
Rodney Sneijder made it 2-1 to Utrecht on the hour mark, before Oar powered down the left and whipped in a back-post cross for Jacob Mulenga to add a third on 73 minutes.
Meanwhile, Aussie team-mates Adam Sarota and Michael Zullo were unused subs on the bench.
Sarota said on Twitter after the game: “First 3 points of the season :).. feels good to win again and congrats to @TommyOar10 for his first goal in a utrecht shirt.”
In England's Premier League, Sydney FC-bound Socceroo Brett Emerton had an unhappy send-off in his final appearance for Blackburn Rovers as they spurned two penalties before conceding a late spotkick to lose 1-0 to Everton.
Emerton played a full game, while Tim Cahill was a 54th-minute substitute for the Toffees after being ill through the week.
Cahill was busy throughout his 35-minute cameo, finding the back of the net with a fine left-foot strike late on, only for the goal to be ruled out for handball.
Elsewhere, Chris Herd was handed just his second ever Premier League start and put in an encouraging full shift as Aston Villa drew 0-0 with Wolverhampton.
Herd came into the side at full-back for QPR-bound Luke Young and worked hard down the flank, while he went close to scoring on two occasions with headers.
On the opening day of the new Italian Serie B season, Carl Valeri put in a full shift as Sassuolo defeated Nocerino 3-1.
