The Young Socceroos have stormed through the AFC tournament to remain unbeaten ahead of Sunday's final against DPR Korea.

The first goal of qualifying for next year's U/20 World Cup in Colombia has been achieved by reaching the tournament's semi-finals.

Now, the young green and gold stars are eying off an historic first Aussie men's continental trophy in Sunday night's final against DPR Korea.

Oar says last year's exit at the group stage of the U/20 World Cup in Egypt still burns him.

A title win on Sunday would be the icing on the cake and would wash away completely those bad memories to restore the name of the Young Socceroos on the Asian and world scene.

"We achieved our first goal of qualifying for the World Cup, that was so important for me as we didn't really do that well at the last U20 World Cup in Egypt, this gives us a chance to show what we can do," the Utrecht and former Brisbane Roar winger told au.fourfourtwo.com.

Last year's Young Socceroos lost all three games in Egypt - including a 3-0 reversal to Costa Rica. They ended bottom of the group behind the Ticos, Czech Republic and Brazil.

In short, it was a disaster with some questioning the youth development philosophy under Dutch coach Jan Versleijen.

However, a core of players from that group such as Oar, Rhyan Grant, Dylan McGowan, Kofi Danning and Ben Kantarovski remained for this AFC tournament.

And with the Dutchman's philosophy in tandem with Aussie coach Alistair Edwards now starting to seep in after two years in the Australian development system, the future is looking very bright.

Australia has also unearthed a real star of the future in play-maker Mustafa Amini who could be seen playing in the A-League soon at his club Central Coast.

Others such as Matt Leckie, Oar and Ben Kantarovski have shone too as the Young Socceroos have caught the eye of the region.

Last Thursday night's 2-0 semi-final victory over Saudi Arabia was the culmination of a tournament that has seen a fantastic crop of players begin to really take on board the FFA's stated policy in youth development.

"We have already gone one step further than the last team by winning the AFC Championship semi final. We are proud of what we have done but we really want to win this final," added a buoyant Oar.

"It will be a massive achievement to go down in history as the first Australians men's team to win an AFC Championship."

Oar added: "It was touch and go whether I was going to be released from my Dutch club but I am really happy that I am here, I think it's great for my development to be playing against the different styles of international football in games that are so important for Australia.

"It is great playing with this group of players and the five games we have had so far have posed us different challenges."
