Champness made his A-League debut in round one off the bench and scored his first goal in the 5-1 rout of the Mariners.

The 20-year-old winger has featured in all of Newcastle's games this season and has caught the eye. Champness, who has played for the Young Socceroos, only joined the Jets in pre-season from Brisbane Roar.

Veteran O'Donovan worked with the forward in pre-season and has been impressed with his ability.

"We've done a lot of work in pre-season, combinations and bits and pieces," he told FourFourTwo.

"But Joey's a natural talent. He's six foot one, he's quick and he has an eye for a goal. If he can put it all together he's got a hell of a chance because he's very young. He's a good kid, he's got a good workrate and good energy around the place."

O'Donovan said Champness hasn't been fazed by the step up to the A-League.

"He's come into the first-team like he's been there a while - that says a lot about him," the Irishman said.

"It hasn't fazed him at all. There's some big personalities in our dressing room but it doesn't bother him. A bit of criticism or whatever is motivation for him, it's water off a ducks back. He goes and tries the same thing the next time - that's a great attitude to have.

"We've got a lot of time for him, we want him to do well and he's certainly started the season very well. I can see him playing a big part closer to Christmas time."

Newcastle host Wellington Phoenix tomorrow and are out to keep their undefeated streak going.

After two wins and two draws from four games, O'Donovan said the Jets aren't getting carrried away with their positive start.

"It's been a good start. Obviously we're unbeaten, I've been getting good service," he said.

"It was a setback last week [with Ronald Vargas' injury] but we've recovered well. I thought we were poor in the first half against the Wanderers but in the second half we were the better team. We need to start every game like we finished the game against the Wanderers.

"It's been an enjoyable start, it's a good club, it's a good bunch of lads. The manager wants to play the right way, but it's early days."
