The Saudis had to win to confirm qualification through the group and at 2-1 the game was theirs with around 20 minutes left.

But a three-goal burst stunned the visitors to wrest control of the game at 4-2.

But the fact they didn’t throw everything at the Aussies in the final 15 minutes and try to salvage their World Cup dreams puzzled Ognenovski.

“It felt like once they conceded, they did sort of drop their heads. I thought they would’ve tried to throw a few more boys up front late on,” he told au.fourfourtwo.com after the game.

“They sort of just dropped their heads and didn’t really try and put too much pressure on us.

“They had nothing to lose in the end so it was a bit strange they didn’t chuck a defender up there just to sort of knock long balls in and try get on the end of them.

“Maybe they didn’t have much left in the tank…”

Ognenovski looked sharp for the Socceroos in tandem with central defensive partner Lucas Neill.

His club season kicks off this Saturday away to Jeonbuk in the K-League.

And after a pre-season that included almost ten friendlies for his club Seongnam, the powerful defender said he’s close to his best.

“I’m not at peak just yet but three or four hard competitive games and I’ll be where I should be," he admitted. "But I felt good tonight.”

He also praised the contribution of fellow defender Matt Spiranovic who played in an unfamiliar role of left full back.

It took time for his fellow Victorian to find his feet even though his Japanese club Urawa have played Spiranovic as a left sided defender in a back three.

“Obviously he doesn’t give us that attacking edge that you get with a Zullo or a Carney but defensively he certainly can do a job for us,” said Ognenovski.

“It was a nice, entertaining game. It took us until the second half to find a rhythm but obviously we haven’t played with that midfield.

“So it took us a little while but eventually we played quite well. And the crowd, the stadium and surface was fantastic.”
