The last team outside of the Old Firm to win the top flight were Aberdeen in 1985.

Champions Rangers pipped Celtic by one point as the SPL title race went to the last day last season but the Ibrox side finished 30 points ahead of third-placed Hearts.

McGarvey, who played for the Hoops between 1980 and 1985, insists supporters will see more of the same when the new campaign begins next month.

"It will be even more of a two-horse race next season," McGarvey told Press Association Sport

"I expect Celtic and Rangers to get better and I don't see how any of the other clubs will.

"Neil Lennon will add to his squad at Celtic and Rangers have got over their financial problems so I expect the gap between the Old Firm and the rest to get even bigger.

"It is the most embarrassing two-horse race in world football, nothing is more certain than Celtic and Rangers will fight for the title and something needs to be done about it.

"When I played we had Aberdeen and Dundee United winning the league and getting to European finals.

"That's how strong our league was then.

"Now you won't get third place getting within 20 points of the winners.

"It needs a revolution and the first thing we need to do is to place more emphasis on schools football.

"It worked when I was growing up and it would work again and the SFA need to look at that.

"Youngsters should not be allowed to sign for clubs until they are 16.

"They are being told at 13 and 14 by clubs that they are not good enough and that isn't right.

"They should be enjoying their football, playing with their school mates and getting the chance to play finals at the big stadiums which encourages them."
