Kevin Blackwell was initially reluctant to allow Carney to go to Beijing but Graham Arnold's persistence and a re-think ensured a change of heart.

Carney revealed last week that he had enjoyed a long chat with the manager and chairman, expressing his desire to take part in Beijing.

The Blades boss told sufc.co.uk: "I have had the Australian Olympic people on to me every day wanting Dave to be available to them and I kept saying 'no' because I wanted him to be part of things here.

"But I relented in the end because I thought it would give him good exposure and the chance to play games.

"Australia are in a very tough group which might help him catch up in terms of fitness and match sharpness."

The Olyroos kick off their bid for Olympic honours against Serbia on Thursday before a date with Argentina on Sunday.
