The Ivory Coast international put the Blues ahead after 15 minutes when he outmuscled home defender Ben Turner before firing in a shot from a tight angle - his sixth goal of the campaign.

Defender Alex put the game out of Coventry's reach 17 minutes from time when he converted a cross from substitute Ricardo Quaresma to ensure the Blues will return to Wembley for the first time since losing last year's Carling Cup final to Tottenham.

"It was good to score a goal today and get through to the semi-finals," Drogba told ITV1.

"It was a very good game for us and to get to go back to Wembley."

The win was interim manager Guus Hiddink's fifth in as many games since taking charge last month.

And the Dutchman paid tribute to Drogba, who has looked reinvigorated since Hiddink's arrival at Stamford Bridge - scoring three times in five game.

"He is dangerous. He is working very hard and he is good for the team," Hiddink said.

"There are still some little things that he needs to improve on, but he is working on them in sessions outside of training which he likes."

Midfielder Michael Essien made his return from a long-term knee injury as a second-half substitute, and Hiddink said he would consider whether to start the Ghanian when they travel to Juventus for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

"I have many hours between now and the start of the Juve game to make a decision," Hiddink said.

"It is very good to have him back in the team. You could see today he played 30 minutes but he has to pick up the game rhythm. The other players in the team you can see have the game rhythm.

"But as I said there is plenty of hours for me to make my decision."

Coventry boss Chris Coleman was disappointed with the way his side conceded their first goal.

"You don't want to give a team like that the chance that we did," Coleman said.

"It was a clinical finish after that I though we did well always pushing up at them, The ball just didn't bounce our way."

Coleman warned his players they would have to get over their cup exit quickly and turn their attention back to league duties.

"This was the biggest game for the club at this new stadium, but we need to move on," he said.

"It is going to be difficult against Bristol City on Tuesday, but we've got to get back on it. We will have to get back to reality."
