Sydney FC midfielder Brandon O’Neill says he is open to playing international football for either Australia or the Republic of Ireland.
O’Neill has made big progress in the past 18 months after leaving Perth Glory for Sydney FC and recently renewed his contract at the Sky Blues for two more years.
The in-form youngster has played all games for Sydney this season with one goal – scored from a free kick in the 4-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in Round One.
As the 22-year-old progresses, he admitted he envisaged breaking into the Socceroos after noticing coach Ange Postecoglou’s willingness to experiment with A-League talent.
O’Neill made two appearances for the Olyroos against Vietnam (2-0) and Jordan (0-0) as the nation failed to qualify for the Olympics.
“It’s a big aspiration of mine to play for Australia, growing up playing here,” O’Neill told FourFourTwo.
“It would be a massive achievement and such an honour for myself and family if I was able to represent the Socceroos one day.
“In saying that I believe I have a lot of improvement and a lot of development left in me to make it at international level.”
Perth-born O’Neill’s parents Lorraine and Myles along with sister Ciara migrated from Rathfarnham in Ireland to Western Australia and partially returned temporarily in O’Neill’s childhood.

The 22-year-old was honest saying he would consider playing for The Green Army should the opportunity present itself.
“Dad went back from Perth back to Adelaide and then back to Perth… I wouldn’t have lived properly in Ireland, but I spent a lot of time there as you can tell by my accent,” he joked.
“I’ve got an Irish passport and obviously mum and dad both have it too… Ireland will always have a huge part in my heart because of my background and family there.
“That would be quite funny if that ever eventuated, if they came knocking it’d be another massive honour to do that.
“It’d be a terribly tough decision if that was the case, even if one country was to reach out I’d take it with both hands that’s for sure.”
And after spending four years at Perth Glory with little success, O’Neill was keen to make his mark in Australia’s domestic competition.

He has no regrets with his move to Sydney after his seamless transition.
“I’m 22, still learning how to play in the A-League, looking back at where I’ve come, playing youth team and not getting games to where I am today,” O’Neill said.
“It’s been a massive improvement in myself and playing career, to have signed a new deal here and develop even further.
“All the feedback I was getting from them was that they were very happy with me and I’m hearing that.
“I take into account what I’m feeling, I’m ecstatic and very happy here in Sydney. I’ve really gotten used to the city and Sydney FC and the fans have really just taken to me and welcomed me into the family.
“It was a very exciting and happy decision to sign on for the next couple of years.”
Sydney play Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Saturday night.
