O'Neill has starred in the A-League this season alongside fellow Aussie Joshua Brillante, with the two regarded as Sydney's midfield engine-room.

In response to their effectiveness transitioning possession from defence to Sydney's marquee frontmen, O'Neill says opposition teams have tried to pile pressure on the midfield duo, which has made them better players.

“Teams are pushing higher up now and trying to press me and Joshy [Brillante] and get on the ball,” O'Neill told Fox Sports.

“But it's actually really good – it’s making me and Joshy think quicker, making sure our first touch is right and it's making us better players.

“If someone is up our backside we need to know where Ninko is and where Adrian is before the ball is played.

“If we keep doing that and we keep getting it to Aido, Ninko, Bobo and Brosquey, we'll continue to hurt teams."

Sydney sit 11 points clear in the A-League and have only lost once all season. Their real challenge may prove the Asian Champions League, where a loss and a draw so far leave Graham Arnold's side in unusual circumstances.

For his part, O'Neill insists he's enjoying every minute.

“I say this a lot, but it is a joy to play in this team,” he said.

“It's a joy on a night like this to get down, get dirty, me and Joshy sliding into tackles, getting water up our nose – it’s great!

“Me and Joshy love it!”
