After waiting nearly 1,500 days for the World Cup to come around again the last thing we need is to have to sit through two-hours of banal and increasingly sponsor-riddled pre-amble to the first game.

But every so often the opening ceremony throws up something so jaw-droppingly, cringe-worthy it makes the whole thing somewhat worthwhile. USA 94 was one such moment as Diana Ross tip-toed forward to take a shot at goal from around 12 yards and inexplicably missed the target screwing her shot horribly wide. But this being the US of A, the show must go on and in ridiculous fashion the goal proceeded to break apart as if shot by an exocet missile. Few could have predicted the prophetic nature of this moment however, as just 30 days later another prima donna with big hair also missed the target from a similar distance to finish the tournament as it had begun.
