The game looked to be heading for a draw when, three minutes from time, the evergreen Aussie defender charged through the middle of the park and unleashed a powerful shot that deflected into the path of Everton, who drove home the winner for Suwon.

Socceroo Matt McKay played the full 90 minutes of Busan I’Park’s goalless draw with Incheon United, while Robbie Cornthwaite put in a full shift as Chunnam Dragons defeated title-contenders Jeju United 1-0.

In the J-League, Alex Brosque played 54 minutes before being sent off for two bookable offences in Shimizu S-Pulse’s 1-0 loss to Urawa Red Diamonids.

Matthew Spiranovic was omitted from the Urawa squad, despite helping his team keep a clean sheet in the 3-0 victory over Kawasaki Frontale during the week.

Socceroo defender Jade North played a full match as Consadole Sapporo were dismantled 7-0 by Kashima Antlers.

Kashima opened the scoring in the eighth minute, when North’s delayed reaction to Shinzo Koroki’s cross allowed Daiki Iwamasa to send a free header into the back of the net.

Just six minutes later, the Socceroo needlessly brought down Yuya Osako in the box and left the referee with no option but to give the Antlers a penalty.

Elsewhere in Japan, Josh Kennedy put in a full shift as Nagoya Grampus were trounced 4-0 by league-leaders Vegalta Sendai.

Midway through the first half, Kennedy produced a sublime piece of skill to control Keiji Tamada’s lobbed pass, only to fire his shot well wide of the target.

In the J2 League, Mark Milligan was an unused substitute in JEF United Chiba’s 4-0 win over Roasso Kumamoto.

In the Chinese Super League, Mile Sterjovski started and played 80 minutes of Dalian Aerbin’s 1-1 draw with Jiangsu Sainty, while Dino Dulbic put in a full shift as Guizhou Renhe defeated Guangzhou R&F 3-0.

Former Adelaide and Brisbane defender Milan Susak played 71 minutes of Tianjin Teda’s 2-1 loss to Liaoning Whowin.

Meanwhile, a knee injury kept Joel Griffiths out of the Shanghai Shenhua squad that lost 1-0 to Henan Jianye.

The defeat leaves Shanghai just one point clear of the relegation zone.

In Europe, Ryan McGowan played a full match and scored as Hearts defeated cross-town rivals Hibernian 5-1 in the Scottish Cup final.

The Jambos opened the scoring in the 15th minute, when McGowan’s deflected shot was stabbed home by Darren Barr.

Early in the second half, the Aussie right-back made it 4-1 with a diving header from close range.

Later McGowan told the Daily Telegraph: “That was a set-piece we’d worked on in training. Rudi got in a shot, their ‘keeper got a hand to it and I nodded it in - it wasn’t that far out.

“I wouldn’t say it was an important goal but, at 3-1, they were looking to get right back in it so it took the wind out of their sails and made us comfortable for the rest of the game.”

In the Danish Superliga, Nathan Coe was absent for SonderjyskE’s 1-1 draw against Silkeborg.

The Socceroo goalkeeper was left out of the squad after expressing his desire for a move away from Denmark.

Elsewhere in Europe, Carl Valeri was not in the Sassuolo side that defeated Reggina 4-1.

Despite the win, Sassuolo missed out on an automatic promotion spot and will now compete in a play-off series with the third through sixth placed Serie B teams.

Bradden Inman scored one and set up another as Newcastle United defeated Aston Villa 2-1 in the final of the HKFC Citibank International Soccer Sevens.

In news off the pitch, Preston North End chairman Peter Risdale told the Lancashire Evening Post that “there has been no interest at all” for young Aussie defender Bailey Wright or the six other players on the club’s transfer-list.

Earlier in the week, Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray expressed his concerns about Rhys Williams’s inclusion in Australia’s WCQ squad. He told the Evening Gazette “It’s not ideal. Rhys has a long-term problem that we’ve been carefully managing for a good while.”

However, he added: “These games are World Cup qualifiers, not meaningless friendlies, so there is something at stake for Australia.

“They’ll be aiming to qualify for the next World Cup in 2014 and I’m sure Rhys will be keen to represent his country in that tournament so we can’t stand in his way.”
