AUSSIES ABROAD: The EuroRoos returned to action over the weekend, with preseason friendlies giving players a chance to stake a claim in their club’s first team plans.
Mathew Leckie started and played 73 minutes for FSV Frankfurt in the 2-0 loss to 1. Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 but bruised a metatarsal in the process.
The former Adelaide United forward was a constant threat down the flank and provided numerous opportunities for Michael Gorlitz and Edmond Kapllani. However, some poor finishing and superb keeping kept Frankfurt goalless.
Ryan McGowan put in a full shift and made an assist while Dylan McGowan played 30 minutes as Hearts defeated Raith Rovers 3-0.
Just before the break, McGowan delivered a neat pass to John Sutton, who fired a low shot past the Rovers’ goalkeeper to give Hearts a 2-0 lead.
Former Brisbane Roar pair Tommy Oar and Adam Saorta started for FC Utrecht in the 6-1 win over FC Breukelen.
Midway through the first half, Oar delivered a well-executed cross to the far post that was headed home by Kenny Teijsse.
Utrecht made it 4-0 when Leon de Kogel finished off another fine cross from Oar.
Mitch Langerak played 45 minutes and Mustafa Amini played 25 minutes as Borussia Dortmund went down 3-1 to Club Brugge.
In the 70th minute, Amini showed his quality with a 60 yard pass that landed straight at the feet of Koray Gunter. Unfortunately for Dortmund, Gunter wasn’t able to capitalise on the opportunity.
Brugge sealed the win in the dying stages of the match, when Langerak prematurely charged off his line and allowed Victor Vazquez to casually pass the ball into the back of the net.
Socceroo goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer played the first half and wore the captain’s armband as Fulham drew 0-0 with HB Køge.
Brett Holman came on after the break and scored the winning goal in Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Burton. Chris Herd also played the second half.
James Holland played a full match as Austria Wien got their OFB Cup campaign off to a positive start with a 3-1 victory against Oberwart.
In the J-League, Alex Brosque played a full match and scored his first goal since May, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Shimizu S-Pulse from going down 5-3 to Kashiwa Reysol.
Josh Kennedy played the full 90 minutes of Nagoya Grampus’ goalless draw with Vegalta Sendai, while Jade North put in a full shift as Consadole Sapporo extended their winless streak to 12 matches following a 4-1 loss to Jubilo Iwata.
In the K-League, Eddy Bosnar started and played 61 minutes as Suwon Bluewings were defeated 3-0 by Jeonbuk Motors. The Bluewings have now conceded 11 goals in three matches.
Luke DeVere played a full match as Gyeongnam failed in their bid to secure a fifth successive clean sheet following a 1-0 loss to Pohang Steelers.
Matt McKay was injured, Robbie Cornthwaite was suspended and Matt Simon was not in the squad as Busan I’Park defeated Chunnam Dragons 3-2.
Injury also prevented Nathan Burns from playing in Incheon United’s surprise 3-2 win over FC Seoul.
Elsewhere in Korea, Adrian Madaschi was absent from the Jeju United team that defeated Daejon 4-1.
In the Chinese Super League, Dino Dulbic put in a full shift for Guizhou Renhe in the 1-1 draw with Liaoning Whowin, while Milan Susak played a full match as Tianjin Teda drew 0-0 with Qingdao Jonoon
Former Adelaide United defender Daniel Mullen played the full 90 minutes of Dalian Aerbin’s 3-2 loss to Dalian Shide, while Rostyn Griffiths put in a full shift for Guangzhou R&F in the 1-0 win over Guangzhou Evergrande.
In China League One, Brendon Santalab scored his eighth goal of the season as Chongqing Lifan drew 1-1 with Tianjin Songjiang.
