Leckie came on in the 58th minute, when the score was tied at 1-1, and wasted little time making his presence felt.

Just five minutes after his introduction, he used his blistering pace to break free of the Hertha defence, before firing a low shot through the legs of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

After the match, the former Adelaide United ace was happy with his goal and the result, but admitted he has not fully recovered from the ankle injury that kept him on the sidelines for the final weeks of FSV’s preseason campaign.

“Of course it is good to score early in the season. I hope it continues like this. It has given me self-confidence,” said Leckie.

“We have taken four points from two games, that’s a good start. It is important that we play on and get good results.

“I was thrown back by a few injuries and I'm not a 100 percent fit. Hopefully I’ll be over it soon.”

Nikita Rukavytsya missed the match because of a calf injury.

Meanwhile, in the Eredivisie, Adam Sarota played the full 90 minutes of FC Utrecht’s 1-0 loss to Feyenoord, but Tommy Oar and Michael Zullo were both out injured.

Jason Davidson was an unused substitute as Heracles Almelo drew 1-1 at home to VVV Venlo.

In the Scottish Premier League, Ryan McGowan played a full match as the Edinburgh derby between Hearts and Hibs ended 1-1.

McGowan again played as an attacking midfielder but, after the game, Hearts boss John McGlynn suggested that may change in the coming weeks.

“We've been playing with Ryan McGowan as the nearest man to Sutton but it didn't work out," said McGlynn. “But nothing really came off for us.

“I've known Ryan since he came to Hearts at 15 and he started as a central midfield player.

“We brought on Mehdi Taouil who is good at pulling the strings but he is observing Ramadan and was not quite right to start.”

In the German 3. Liga, Mitch Langerak made headlines for all the wrong reasons following a calamitous piece of goalkeeping during Borussia Dortmund II’s 2-1 loss to Saarbrücken.

Just eight minutes into the match, the Socceroo shot stopper was fed a regulation back pass, but, rather than kick it away, he hesitated and allowed Marius Laux to steal the ball from under him and fire it into the vacant goal.

Despite having what German paper Der Westen described as a “black day” on Saturday, Langerak was named on the substitute’s bench, alongside Mustafa Amini, for Dortmund’s 2-1 Super Cup loss to Bayern Munich on Sunday night. Neither player made it on to the pitch.

Soccerroo striker Scott McDonald was a notable omission from the Boro squad, but manager Tony Mowbray insisted: “There's no situation with Scott.

"I wanted to get Ledesma going today as he's had a big step up and he got himself a goal. Luke Williams looked exciting in the last 20 minutes.

"Scott just has to get his head down and work hard.”

Patrick Kisnorbo was an unused substitute as Leeds United thrashed Shrewsbury Town 4-0.

Mark Bresciano made an impressive start to his Al-Gharafa career, scoring a fantastic volley during the 3-2 win against Muaither.

Curtis Good and Brad Inman both started for the Newcastle Reserves in the 1-1 draw against Blackpool.

Earlier in the week, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew gave his first impressions of Good and suggested he could be an option at left back.

“He’s a naturally left footed center-half and that’s unusual, and that’s why we paid that money for him,” said Pardew. “He’s a young player and has a lot to learn but he can also play at left-back.

“He showed he’s very, very tidy with the ball, and all he’s got to do now is get used to the physical side of this game which I think he’s going to grasp, and fingers crossed for that.”

In the MLS, Tim Cahill made his competitive debut for New York Red Bulls, playing a full match and providing an assist during the 2-0 victory against Houston Dynamo.

Early in the match, the Socceroo midfielder wasted a golden opportunity to put his team ahead when, from just six yards out, he sent a header wide of an open goal

However, he made amends in the second half by providing the assist for New York’s opener.
