Holland played the full 90 minutes of the match and took another step towards securing his spot in the starting lineup.

However, he told Sport10.at that the experience only made him a stronger.

“It was a learning curve for me and certainly not what I was expecting," he said. "But it was also important. I came to a new club in a new city in a new country - there were many changes.

“You have to be patient. I did not have enough consistency in my game and I was never good enough for an extended period. Also mentally I've learned a lot. It has made me stronger.”

Just two minutes into the game McGowan was given a yellow card for an elbow on Callum Davidson, but St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas was furious with the decision and maintained that the Aussie should have been sent off.

“From where I was standing it was a blatant elbow," he said. "They are jaw-breakers, the kind of challenge we are trying to get out of the game.

"I saw it from the stand and it was a bad, bad challenge. Callum is lucky.”

Not long after the incident, the versatile Aussie came within a whisker of giving Hearts an early lead, but had his shot cleared off the line by Davidson.

Mitch Langerak’s Borussia Dortmund failed to defend their LIGA Total! Cup title following a penalty shootout loss to Werder Bremen.

The score was tied 3-3 after regulation time and went straight to penalties, where Bremen came out 5-4 victors.

Fit-again Matt McKay played the second half of Busan I’Park’s 2-0 win against Gwangju.

In the final minute of the match, McKay showed great vision to pick out Ji-Hun Yoo, who hammered the ball past the hapless goalkeeper to secure all three points for Busan.

Former Melbourne Heart defender Brendan Hamill was an unused substitute for Seongnam Illwha in the 3-1 loss to Pohang Steelers.

In the Chinese Super League, Joel Griffiths came on in the 78th minute and scored for Shanghai Shenhua in the 5-1 demolition of Hangzhou.

The Aussie striker tapped in a clever pass from Nicolas Anelka to score his third goal of the season.

Dino Dulbic played a full match as Guizhou Renhe defeated league leaders Guangzhou Evergrande 2-1, while Jonas Salley salvaged a point for Shanghai Shenxin with a late goal in the 1-1 draw against Dalian Aerbin.
