The home side ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Fernando Varela, Gutierrez Jonas and Bosko Jankovic to move up to 11th in the table, while Escudero Raul Garcia had equalised for the visitors on the hour mark.

The result means Osasuna remain seven points clear of the relegation zone with five games to play.

They went into the match looking to bounce back from being dumped out of the UEFA Cup at the penultimate hurdle by Sevilla and created the first chance of the match on 11 minutes, Mallorca goalkeeper Miguel Moya parrying Roberto Soldado's fierce shot from the centre of the area.

But that was a rare bright spot for Osasuna in the first half as Mallorca gained the upper hand, Guillermo Pereyra heading against a post from 12 yards on the quarter hour and Argentine defender Jonas producing a fine save from Lopez Ricardo 20 minutes later, the keeper tipping his drive round a post.

The hosts made their pressure pay in the 37th minute with a wonder goal from Varela, the defender striding out from the back before cracking a shot into the bottom left-hand corner from fully 35 yards.

Mallorca continued their domination in the early part of the second-half, Arango testing Ricardo with a header and Jose Carlos Nunes placing another header over the bar in the opening eight minutes, but were rocked by an Osasuna equaliser.

Two minutes after Torres Juanfran could have drawn them level with a header which came back off a post, Valmiro Valdo's cross from the left found Garcia on the edge of the penalty area and the 20-year-old midfield player shot arrowed into the bottom corner.

But any thoughts of an Osasuna revival were quickly dispelled as Mallorca restored their lead scarcely five minutes later.

Jonas had already given warning of the danger he posed in the box on 64 minutes when he headed Casadesus Victor's cross narrowly wide of the left post and two minutes later he found the bottom corner with a shot from 12 yards.

And Mallorca put the result beyond doubt with nine minutes remaining, Juan Arango's shot from the left hand edge of the box striking a post and Serbia international Jankovic reacting quickest to slot home the rebound.
