NATIONAL team coach Holger Osieck admits he has no idea what club-less Socceroo David Carney is up to these days.
Speaking from England ahead of Australia’s February 6 friendly against Romania, the German said he had no news on the AWOL leftback.
Osieck has been criticised in the past for playing the 29-year-old despite a lack of gametime at club level.
But since the former Sydney FC defender vanished off the radar, his whole career appears to have been plunged into crisis...with little hope of a Socceroo recall any time soon.
“That is a very difficult one because I haven’t got any information recently - he’s just trying to find himself a club,” Osieck said when asked about Carney.
“He’s definitely running out of time in Europe because the transfer window closes I think tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
“I don’t know what other options he may have on his plate. I don’t know what his agent has ready for him.
“It’s just very unfortunate that he has nearly lost six – seven – months playing which is never very productive.”
Carney, who has continually rejected talk of a return to the A-League, was linked with Persepolis FC in the Iran Pro League in November although nothing came off a reported trial with the club.
His most recent club was Uzbek outfit FC Bunyodokor, who he signed with in February last year, before being considered surplus to requirements.
During an acrimonious split with the club he was accused by coach, Mirjalol Qosimov, of saving his best for the national team.
The Socceroos match in Malaga, Spain, will be an opportunity for Osieck to run the rule over his Euro- and Asia-Roos prior to a crucial World Cup qualifier against Oman in Sydney on March 26.
Australian-based and Asian-based players were given an opportunity to show their mettle in the Hong Kong EAFF East Asian Cup qualifiers in December.
The Socceroos tactician was in no mood to discuss his omissions from the squad announced yesterday such as Middlesbrough striker Scott McDonald – who has been in good goal-scoring touch this season and looked to be building a strong case for a recall – or Millwall’s Shane Lowry who also missed the cut.
Osieck said: “You can extend the list and I can tell you, not confidentially but very frankly, I have a list of 65.
“And I know about the players and if I would pick anybody, it would be extra to extend our plans and our squad.
“I made up my mind based on recent performances and if you have a look yourself, who is playing regularly and who is doing well and you will find the answer yourself.”
