NEW Australia boss Holger Osieck said the Socceroos produced some "beautiful football" but lacked the finish in Saturday morning's entertaining 0-0 draw with Switzerland in St Gallen.
Australia spurned decent chances from Lucas Neill, Brett Holman and Scott McDonald, while Switzerland's Alexander Frei missed a penalty and Socceroos stopper Mark Schwarzer made some good saves to keep the scores level.
"We tried to play football," Osieck said. "We had some beautiful inter-passing, some beautiful combination play, and we created some excellent opportunities.
"Unfortunately the final touch was not that good, but we're going to work on that."
The German boss, though, was philosophical about the scoreline.
"It is not the score that matters. Our performance in the first-half was excellent.
"What we tried to do - to play positively up front - we did. We had a lot of scoring opportunities but unfortunately it didn't work.
"The second-half we started a bit sloppy after they brought in four different players, so it was a complete different picture.
"All in all the team played well and we got back into the game and it is 0-0 but maybe it was a 0-0 of the better kind."
Osieck added: "We created chances and that is definitely a positive.
"If you convert it or not is a different story. The other team didn't do better."
Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had a busy night, including having to face up to Switzerland's Alexander Frei's spotkick where the striker blazed his shot over off the corner of the frame.
Schwarzer, though, was pleased with the Socceroos' performance over the 90 minutes in Osieck's debut game in charge.
"It was our first game under our new manager and I think overall the performance was pretty good," he said.
"It was a busy night. We expected them to put us under a lot of pressure. They are a good side, they're a good offensive side.
"They showed at the World Cup they're more than capable of beating top teams when they beat Spain in their group game. We knew it was going to be a tough game."
Australia next face Poland and Osieck admitted there would be changes to his side.
"I want to give the other players playing time as well, so definitely we're going to have a different team," he said.
"Just training is not enough, so we're going to have some changes and we'll see how it goes in Poland."
