SOCCEROOS boss Holger Osieck said there were plenty of positives to take from Sunday's 3-0 win over New Zealand but none moreso than the performance of young trio Michael Zullo, Rhys Williams and James Troisi.
Osieck gave Zullo and Troisi starting berths in the Socceroos eleven, while Williams was a half-time substitute.
The German boss told Fox Sports after the game he knew little about the trio a few months ago but was delighted with their performance against the All Whites which shows Australia has plenty of depth.
“Overall there were a lot of positives. I never think about individuals, but when we look at the left full-back position we were definitely lacking depth but I think we found an answer for that,” Osieck said about Zullo who filled in for the injured David Carney on the left-side of defence.
“Rhys Williams, after his long absence, showed some good sparks that he could be one of the Socceroos again.
“I think overall, apart from the score and the overall performance, I think on the individual basis today I've found more depth for the future.”
Osieck added: “James (Troisi) is another one. He did a good job on the left flank and is another alternative.
“It's amazing how everything came together. I didn't know about these boys, I'd just heard of them.
“They were part of the camp in Germany, that was my first time with them and from then on I thought maybe there's something.
“I travelled and watched Zullo in Utrecht and Rhys in Middlesbrough and it paid off.”
Osieck, though, said there were parts of the performance which left him disappointed, particularly the issue of finishing which hurt Australia at the 2011 Asian Cup.
“It was obvious we created some excellent stuff up front, but we were not clinical enough to finish. That was what I dislike,” Osieck said.
“All the efforts we put into it, all the imagination and creativity is in vain if we don't finish it off.”
Osieck also said the Adelaide Oval pitch and wet conditions were not a factor for his side in a game which failed to reach any great heights.
“It's not an issue for me. We have to play on any surface. We never discussed it. When you go into that, you always give players an excuse and that's the worse you can do before the game,” Osieck said.
“The pitch was pretty even. It was nice for combination football and we showed that on a couple of occasions.”
Australia next meet Serbia in Melbourne on Tuesday and Osieck said there would be changes to the side given the short break between matches.
“We had a couple of our experienced players on the bench today. We will see them on the pitch against Serbia,” Osieck said.
“I had to balance out how far I can load the players in order to have enough energy left for Tuesday.”
