Amad Al Hosni scored the game's only goal on 17 minutes, although Australia dominated possession for most of the contest.

However, Osieck said Australia were poor in the first half and showed some improvements after the break, but it wasn't enough.

“We definitely didn't play the way we normally play. We lost a game which we normally shouldn't lose against an opponent who is definitely inferior to us,” Osieck told Fox Sports.

“We made a couple of mistakes, in particular in the first half, where we didn't perform to our potential. And that's the outcome, we lost the game.”

As for the Socceroos' domination of possession, Osieck said that meant little.

“Possession is always for statistics. People who know football they juggle with numbers, but possession is not the ultimate wisdom in football,” he said.

However, the German tactician was confident his side would rebound against Thailand in Bangkok in four days time.

“We knew it would be a tough road trip anyway but why should we drop our hats,” Osieck said.

“We are confident, we know what we can do, we know our quality and we have to move on.”

Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill was at a loss to explain the result, but acknowledged Australia were well below their best.

"It is hard to put our finger on it. We tried to prepare knowing we would be playing against a wounded animal, it was going to be tough, they were going to start fast. A lapse in concentration gave them an advantage and something to hold on to and we couldn't find a reaction or a response," Neill said.

“We didn't do an awful lot wrong. There were a couple of individual errors, but we also didn't do anything amazing either. We didn't get the passing going like we were in the last game against Oman, we weren't crisp enough.

"It was just one of those below par performances. Had we been 10 or 15 per cent better it probably would've been a different result.

He added: "Once you get out on the pitch, it's 11 v 11. The shape was pretty much the same as it has been for a number of years now.

"We can't point fingers at anybody or any reason, it's just one of those things. It's unfortunate, we wanted to get the job done and go undefeated.

"Now it gives us a little bit of a kick up the backside going into the Thailand game. We have to be really switched on. We know that'll be a difficult game in difficult conditions.

“Maybe we respond better under pressure. Maybe we needed that. We needed to feel like it's difficult. No games are easy. Now we know it's a situation where we must win.”
