Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata will place a video-conferencing call to the superstar’s agent and lawyer at 6pm AEST time in a bid to secure the services of one of the world football’s greats.

A decision is expected to be known in the 24 hours after the call.

The new Sky Blues CEO knows this could be the biggest deal ever in the A-League’s history and says he won’t die wondering as he gives it everything he’s got.

“Financially I think we’ve got a good offer, it might not be the best he’s ever seen but Alessandro can leave a footprint or a legacy, if you will, in Australian football for years to come,” Pignata told au.fourfourtwo.com on his way to Melbourne airport.

“What he can do for football in Australia, we’re hoping that it’s something that appeals to him.

“Del Piero is a huge name. You’ve got Beckham and Del Piero and other players on that level."

Pignata met with Sydney Chairman Scott Barlow today to finalise the details of the offer.

However, at this point a long-term offer hasn’t been discussed and the club is only looking at a one year deal for the former Scudetto and Champions League winner.

The Sky Blues CEO is flying to Melbourne this afternoon to link up with agent Lou Sticca – who’s facilitated the deal - to present their case.

“It’s a six months deal where he can either spend it in a Sydney summer or a European winter, and I know where I’d rather spend it,” added Pignata.

“So it is from a lifestyle point of view, as well. And there is a massive Italian community not only in Sydney but across Australia.

“And what we’ve seen on social media this morning with the story just shows you… it would be a massive coup for the A-League... from his nationality and the amount of people who follow Serie A I expected it to be big.

“But it’s tough,” he added.

“We’ve come in at the last time and he [Del Piero] has a firm offer from Sion. There are two days till the transfer window closes there but here it’s different.

"But if he wants to play in Europe he’s got two days to decide. So there is urgency in that respect.

“We have a good, competitive offer and I think an opportunity of Alessandro to leave a legacy in Australian football.”

Pignata has appealed to the Australian public to support the deal if he secures the prized signature of the Juventus and Azzurri great.

“If we can do this then everyone’s got to help in this acquisition of Alessandro Del Piero.

“For this to work we need support from corporates and fans. For fans it’s about memberships, and for corporates it’ to get involved with sponsorships.

“We’ll need to rally that and we’re quite confident that if we do this, we’ll get that support from everyone concerned.

Sydney’s current marquee player Nicky Carle leaves for the UAE on a year-long loan move later this week where he'll link up with Baniyas SC.

This move by Carle opens up the possibility of Sydney FC bringing in a big name replacement.

Del Piero fits the bill perfectly being a superstar on and off the park.

During his time at Juve, Del Piero helped the club to win six Serie A crowns and a UEFA Champions League.

Over 19 years, Del Piero played 704 games for Juventus, scoring 289 goals. He also lifted the World Cup in 2006 after Italy knocked out the Socceroos on their way to the final.

Del Piero was named by Pele as one of the top 125 living footballers in the world.

Pignata added: “I’m not a betting man but I’m going to give it my best shot and in the Italian language.

“I’m going to give it a red-hot go. I don’t want to die wondering. If we succeed it’ll be massive. If we don’t we walk away and say we did our best.”
