Milligan was brought on in the 65th minute in Saturday’s Christmas Derby, after missing last week’s 2-1 away win over Brisbane Roar with a minor hamstring injury.

The Socceroo was fouled by City goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis in the box, and stepped up to convert the winning penalty in the 96th minute.

Muscat said Milligan set a good example for the youngsters.

“It was late, but it was a great deal of persistence and we got a reward,” Muscat said.

“His behaviour and attitude while he was injured yesterday, and that moment late on in the game, he’s played 30 minutes, that’s his reward for the effort, attitude and rehab.

“I just thought it was great for players in the change room, who may be starting their career, to witness something like that.

“I certainly couldn’t give them that experience by speaking to them. Visually watching the way he went about his business, that experience is invaluable, not only to the younger group, but the whole team.

“He showed so much care in his meticulous rehab to give himself the opportunity tonight, and in the end I’m pleased for him because he gets the reward for that.”

Muscat also admitted the Victory fans’ joy put a smile on his face this Christmas.

“It was a euphoric moment for everyone and you realise there’s not much time left,” he said.

“There were a lot of very good performances tonight. Stefan Nigro at full-back was outstanding, Rhys Williams and Thomas Deng’s partnership is growing.

“It was an unbelievable contest, but we were really proactive tonight. I get a good feeling when the players are in that mode, and they get a good reward.”
