SCOTT Chipperfield returned to duty for FC Basel scoring the winner for his club while Mark Schwarzer and Scott McDonald redeemed themselves this weekend after average displays in their previous outings.
Scott Chipperfield made his return from Socceroos duty off the bench for Swiss Super League team FC Basel when they played the competition leaders FC Zurich in a fiery affair.
The game was locked at 1-1 when Scott entered the fray on the hour and not long after Zurich were reduced to ten men after a player was sent off for a second booking.
Basel couldn't take advantage of the numerical advantage before they themselves were reduced to ten men in the 76th minute. Three minutes later however with 20men left on the field Chippers headed home for Basel and saw them to a 2-1 victory.
After fluffing Celtic's best shot on goal in the Old Firm Derby last weekend, Scott McDonald bounced back this weekend by opening the scoring for Celtic against Motherwell.
Playing against his old team, Scott had his first chance in the fourth minute when he linked up with Georgios Samaras but fired his shot beyond the crossbar. Later in the first half McDonald launched a powerful shot on goal but the Motherwell keeper produced a fine save with one hand.
Then on the hour McDonald got a shot away which didn't look like troubling the keeper until it bobbed on an uneven Fir Park pitch and bounced over the keeper's leg.
The Hoops then went in search of a second goal but instead conceded an equaliser in the 81st minute. With the game finishing a 1-1 draw Celtic is now second on the table behind Rangers on goal difference.
Mark Schwarzer turned around his poor mid week performance against Manchester United by keeping a clean sheet as Fulham defeated the Premiership's bottom team West Brom 2-0.
Schwarzer was made to work for his clean sheet too. When the West Brom striker was tripped in the box in injury time he was awarded a penalty but Schwarzer dived to his right and blocked the shot.
The potential match up of two Socceroo strikers with Newcastle playing Everton came to an anti-climax. Tim Cahill was suspended for Everton while Mark Viduka watched the 0-0 draw from the bench.
More good news for the Socceroos as Harry Kewell played the full shift in a seven goal affair for Galatasary against Kocaelispor. It was bad news for Harry's boys though as they were on the wrong side of the ledger going down 5-2 against the team second from the bottom.
Better news for Michael Petkovic though as he kept another clean sheet this weekend for Turkish Super Lig leaders Sivasspor defeating Eskisehirspor 1-0.
