ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

HARRY KEWELL (Liverpool)
The Reds were away to Aston Villa for their season opener...but Kewell didn't make it onto the bench for the game.

LUCAS NEILL (West Ham)
West Ham met Man City to start the season and went down 2-0 to the visitors - but Neill's out with an injury and missed it.

MARK VIDUKA - JAMES TROISI (Newcastle United)
Viduka had found his scoring touch for Boro and is hoping to carry on that momentum with the new-look Magpies under Sam Allardyce. Teenager Troisi wasn't in the squad that met Allardyce's old club, Bolton, but Viduka played for 71 minutes before being subbed. He couldn't find his way onto the scoresheet but looked at home in the black and white stripes as the Magpies eased to an impressive 3-1 away win.

MARK SCHWARZER - BRAD JONES (Middlesbrough)
Boro met Blackburn Rovers for the first game of the new season and Schwarzer was between the sticks with Jones on the bench, but couldn't keep out the Rovers' supersubs, with Boro going down 2-1.

BRETT EMERTON (Blackburn Rovers)
Rovers faced Boro for the season's start, but Emerton didn't even make it onto the bench, never mind the pitch. His side still grabbed a solid 2-1 win thanks to new boy Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire.

JOSIP SKOKO (Wigan Athletic)
Wigan met Everton for their first match of the new league and Skoko started on the bench...and stayed there as his side went down 2-1 to Everton.

TIM CAHILL (Everton)
Cahill admits he is 'devastated' after he ended last season with an injury - and starts the new one with another. Ironically, the injury came after Tim made it through the Asian Cup without damaging himself, only to pick up a knock in Everton's friendly against Werder Bremen. Everton won at home 2-1 against Wigan.

ADRIAN LEIJER - AHMED ELRICH (Fulham)
The former Victory wonderkid will be wanting to earn a place in Fulham's first team and chances are he could after Franck Quedrue left for Birmingham. Adam Elrich will be hoping to shake off last season's injuries to compete for place too. Fulham almost pulled off a surprise against Arsenal but both Aussies were missing from the first team squad.

ADAM FEDERICI (Reading)
His place at Reading is guaranteed for another two seasons after signing a new contract but he's second choice 'keeper behind Reading talisman Marcus Hahnemann. And with the kind of form Hahnemann showed against United, Federici faces a long season on the bench.

BUNDESLIGA

MICHAEL BEAUCHAMP - JOSHUA KENNEDY - MATTHEW SPIRANOVIC - DARIO VIDOSIC (Nurnberg)
Beauchamp started as Nurnberg lost 2-0 at home against on Karlsruhe, with Kennedy coming on for the last 32 minutes, but the other Aussies were missing from the squad.

ITALIAN SERIE A
MARK BRESCIANO (Palermo)
His move to Manchester City from Palermo is still up in the air after his club baulked at City's plan to pay his $10 million transfer in instalments. Sven says he still wants him, but Bresh has been ordered back to Sicily to return to training. Man City faced West Ham - and ironically, West Ham are the latest club said to be linked to a move to bring Bresh to the Premiership if the City deal falls through. Bresh returned to his club, and came on after 11 minutes in their 3-2 win against San Marco on Sunday, scoring on the 38 minute mark.

VINCE GRELLA (Torino)
Left Parma to join Torino on a three year contract over the close season. Will want to impress his new manager after a disappointing performance at the Asian Cup and an outspoken blast at rivals and officials. The Serie A season starts on August 25.

ZELJKO KALAC (AC Milan)
Spider will again be bench-warming for most of the coming season unless Dida knacks himself.

JESS VANSTRATTAN (Juventus)
In by popular demand. The problem with learning from the best, $75 million Gianluigi Buffon, is that 25 year old Vanstrattan's chances of first team exposure are pretty limited, especially as he's third or fourth choice sticksman. But he IS an Australian Juventus player.

ITALIAN SERIE B

CARL VALERI
With Vince Grella's disappointing performance for the Socceroos in the Asian Cup, there's never been a better time for Valeri to impress and stake his claim for Grella's spot. His club kick off their season away against Modena on August 25.

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

JAMES WESOLOWSKI - PATRICK KISNORBO - PAUL HENDERSON (Leicester City)
Kisnorbo was suspended but Henderson and Wesolowski both started in their match against Blackpool at home. They played the whole game but the Foxes lost 1-0.

DAVID CARNEY (Sheffield United)
Sydney FC's former star winger didn't even make it onto the bench for the 2-2 draw with Colchester.

RICHARD GARCIA (Hull City)
Started for his new club in their home game against Plymouth, but they lost 3-2.

NICK WARD (QPR)
QPR drew 2-2 away at Bristol City but there was no place in the squad for Ward.

ENGLISH LEAGUE ONE

CHRIS COYNE (Luton Town)
Made the starting line-up for the home match against Hartlepool and picked up a yellow card but his side won 2-1.

NEIL KILKENNY (Oldham)
Oldham still wanted him on loan after their first attempt to borrow was blocked at the last moment when City's transfer of Ghaly fell through. and they got him in time for their 2-1 win against Swansea. Kilkenny played the whole game - but managed to get his new boss sent to the stands when John Sheridan reacted furiously to a savage tackle on Kilkenny.

JOEL PORTER (Hartlepool United)
Went down 2-1 to Chris Coyne's Luton with Porter coming on after 59 minutes.

SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE

SCOTT McDONALD (Celtic)
Tipped to be a big star at Celtic, the McSocceroo has already scored for his new boss Gordon Strachan in pre-season friendlies and is the Socceroos' great hope as the striker to replace Mark Viduka. He missed their first couple of games because of suspension, including this weekend's trip to Falkirk where they thrashed the 10-man home side 4-1. He would have expected to line up next week, but, according to manager Gordon Strachan, maybe not.

DANNY INVINCIBILE (Kilmarnock)
Has played an important role with Kilmarnock since joining in 2003 and will want to carry on with that in the coming season. Kilmarnock beat Dundee United 2-1 at home on Monday night but Danny didn't get a game.

ERIK PAARTALU (Gretna)
Paartalu stayed on the bench as his tiny club took on Hibs and had to watch on as his side squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 by full-time.

SCOTTISH FIRST DIVISION

SIMON STOREY (Partick Thistle)
Partick thrashed Livingston 3-0 at home and Storey was in the starting line-up in defence.

DUTCH EREDIVISIE

JASON CULINA (PSV Eindhoven)
After a mediocre Asian Cup, Jason will be hoping to find the net for PSV more often than he has so far with just one goal from 51 outings, compared to his blistering 12 goals out of 38 appearances for previous club, FC Twente. PSV lost 1-0 to a weakened Ajax outfit for the Johan Cruijff Schaal.

LUKE WILKSHIRE (FC Twente)
After poor performances for the Socceroos, Wilkshire will be wanting to get his career back on track at FC Twente. Their season starts next weekend, away to Excelsior

EDDIE BOSNAR (Heracles)
Heracles finished the season in 14th place and Bosnar will be hoping to play a part in defence for their coming campaign. They play host to PSV on August 19.

BRETT HOLMAN (NEC)
Holman's squandered chances for the Socceroos are best forgotten, but he was knocking them home for NEC last season including a winning brace against PSV. That's the kind of form he'll want to remember much more than his misses while in green and gold. He's started well with a goal in their recent friendly. NEC play Roda at home next Saturday.

SPANISH LIGA BBVA

JOHN ALOISI
We left him here, because, well, where else are we going to put him? After his contract with Alaves ran out, talks for him to come home to play in the A-League broke down when Sydney and Roar failed to find the cash he was looking for. Was hoping to sign for a Scandinavian club this week, but the deal fell through.

ROMANIAN LIGA 1

WAYNE SRHOJ - JONATHAN McKAIN (FCU Politehnica Timisoara)
McKain saw red after 64 minutes during Timisoara's 2-2 away draw with Club-Napoca last weekend, with Shroj coming on after 83 minutes. It was a heated match with both sides finishing with 10 men, and 12 yellow cards shown. They beat Pandurii Târgu-Jiu 3-1 at home this weekend to go second top in the league. Shroj started the game and picked up a booking after 72 minutes. McKain was missing from the squad.

JOSH MITCHELL - JOSHUA ROSE - MICHAEL BAIRD - SPASE DILEVSKI (FC Universitatea Craiova)
Dilevski joined from Roar for the new season. Mitchell and Rose both played the full game for Craiova's 2-1 win over Aisi, while Baird was subbed after 77 minutes. Dilesvski stayed on the bench. They lost 3-1 CFR 1907 Cluj-Napoca at home this weekend. Mitchell and Rose played the full game, but the other pair didn't even get a look in from the bench.

NORWEGIAN PREMIER LEAGUE

SHANE STEFANUTTO (Lillestrom)
Lillestrom beat Lyn Oslo 4-0 away on Sunday night with Shane playing a key starting role in defence. He's highly thought of at the club and quoted extensively on their club website. If you can understand Norwegian. Which, erm, we can't.

KASEY WEHRMAN (Fredrikstad)
His side drew 2-2 with Viking Stavanger, with Wehrman playing the whole match and picking up a booking along the way. He sent in the cross that led to his side's late and vital equaliser.

SWISS SUPER LEAGUE

MILE STERJOVSKI - SCOTT CHIPPERFIELD (FC Basel)
Chippers was badly missed by the Socceroos after excusing himself from the Asian Cup to be by his pregnant wife's side. Sterj's role was as a bit part player, making only one brief appearance so both will be focusing now on their club's campaign. Chipperfield struck again last weekend, grabbing an 88th minute consolation goal in Basel's thumping 5-1 defeat to the Young Boys. Injured Sterj missed the bench again. Chipperfield played the whole match in their dramatic 3-2 win over Sion to top the table.

TURKISH SUPERLIG

MICHAEL PETKOVIC (Sivasspor)
Petko looked to have locked down a regular first team place as 'keeper and he was hoping to hold on to that position when the new season started with the game against Trabzonspor away from home. Unfortunately the game was abandoned after a fan attacked a player following a bruising tackle between an Israeli player and an Arab one, which then sparked a pitch invasion and full-on brawl.

NICKY CARLE (Genclerbirligi)
Genclerbirligi lost 2-1 to their own reserves side in the Superlig - but Carle started and played the whole game, earning a yellow in the process.

JAPANESE J-LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

ALVIN CECCOLI (Avispa Fukuoka)
It was his 33rd birthday last week and his side won 3-1 against Tokushima Vortis with Ceccoli playing the full game. Avispa stay third in the league after beating Ehime 2-0 on Sunday night. Ceccoli played the whole game.

Liaoning FC drew 0-0 Zhejiang Lvcheng on Wednesday to slip to ninth place but beat defending champs Shandong 2-1 at home.

DANISH SAS-LIGAEN
