AUSSIES ABROAD: It was a productive weekend for the Aussie contingent abroad, with five players finding the back of the net.
In the Turkish Super League, James Troisi scored one and set up another as Keyserispor’s demolished Angaragucu 5-0.
Midway through the first half, Troisi sent a perfectly weighted cross into the box for Emir Kujovic to tap home. Just three minutes later, the Socceroo attacker made a well timed run down the middle of the park and produced a good finish to put his side 3-0 up.
The goal was Troisi’s third in the last four games and ninth of the season
In the English Premier League, Chris Herd scored his first goal for Aston Villa in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.
After subdued performances against Arsenal and Chelsea, Herd did relatively well, making some well-timed challenges and delivering some neat passes before being subbed off 73 minutes into the match.
Mark Schwarzer played the full 90 minutes in Fulham’s 3-0 win away to Bolton. The Aussie shot stopper was rarely tested in a match that his side dominated from start to finish.
Tim Cahill started and played 80 minutes of Everton’s 2-2 draw with Norwich.
Cahill bungled a golden opportunity early in the second half when he fired a close range shot directly at the Norwich goalkeeper.
In the Championship, Reading took another step closer to promotion with a 2-0 victory over Leeds United.
Adam Federici had an uneventful first half as 10-man Leeds failed to threaten the Reading goal. He did, however, produce a good save early in the second half to keep out Robert Snodgrass’ dipping free kick.
Late in the match, he spilled a long range free kick, again from Snodgrass, but recovered before Leeds could capitalise on the error.
According to the Actim Index, the official player rankings for the nPower Championship, Federici is currently the best goalkeeper and seventh best player in the league.
At the other end of the table, Neil Kilkenny’s relegation-threatened Bristol City defeated fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest 1-0.
Kilkenny came on in the 68th minute, while New Zealander Chris Wood scored the winner from the penalty spot.
Richard Garcia returned from injury and played 90 minutes for Hull in the 2-0 loss to Shane Lowry’s Millwall.
Lowry put in a dominant performance at the back and made it difficult for the Tigers to seriously threaten the Millwall goal.
Scott McDonald made his first start since January as Middlesbrough lost 2-0 against promotion rivals Cardiff City. The loss saw Boro drop to eighth place, one point from a promotion play-off spot. Rhys Williams is still recovering from an ankle injury.
In League 1, Bailey Wright scored his first goal for Preston North End in a 1-1 draw against MK Dons.
Wright, who reverted to centre back for the match, ran onto a Danny Mayor free kick and headed home the equaliser in second half stoppage time.
Dean Bouzanis put in a full shift as Oldham went down 1-0 at home to Charlton. Bouzanis had a solid game between the posts, but could do nothing to stop Yann Kermorgrant’s close range header.
In the Scottish Premier League, Ryan McGowan played 90 minutes as Hearts won 2-1 away to Dunfermline. Early in the second half, the Aussie right-back had a header cleared off the line, before Darren Barr headed home the follow up.
After the match, McGowan received the Young Player of the Year award for Hearts.
Aaron Mooy was an unused substitute in St Mirren’s 3-1 loss to Rangers.
In the German Bundesliga, Nikita Rukavytsya played the full 90 minutes of Hertha Berlin’s 0-0 draw away to Borrusia Monchengladbach.
An injured thigh kept Matthew Leckie out of the ‘Gladbach squad.
James Holland returned to the starting line up and played 67 minutes of Austria Wien’s 1-0 victory over Ried, while, in Itay’s Serie B, Carl Valeri was absent from the match day squad as Sassuolo and Modena fought out a 0-0 draw.
Luke Wilkshire played 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card as Dynamo Moscow drew 1-1 against Rubin Kazan.
In the J-League, Alex Brosque put in a full shift and scored as Shimizu S-Pulse defeated Vissel Kobe 1-0.
Late on in the match, an attempted Kobe clearance landed at the feet of Brosque, who rounded the goalkeeper and fired home the winner.
Josh Kennedy missed Nagoya’s 1-0 victory over Sagan Tosu because of a lower back injury.
Jade North played 90 minutes in Consadole Sapporo’s 2-0 loss to Kashiwa Reysol. The defeat leaves Sapporo entrenched in the relegation zone, with just one point from five matches.
Elsewhere in Japan, Urawa Red Diamonds defeated Kashima Antlers 3-1. Matthew Spiranovic was not in the Urawa squad.
In the J2- League, Mark Milligan came on in the 85th minute of JEF United’s 1-0 victory away to Mito Hollyhock.
In the K-League, Eddy Bosnar played 90 minutes as Suwon Bluewings drew 1-1 away to Chunnam Dragons. Matt Simon and Robbie Cornthwaite were not in the Chunnam squad.
Matt McKay played another full match as Busan I’Park defeated Dajeon Citizens 1-0.
The news wasn’t so good for Nathan Burns, who came off after 32 minutes in Incheon United’s 2-1 loss away to Gangwon.
Luke Devere’s Gyeongnam continued their poor run of form, losing 2-0 at home to Jeonbuk Motors. Devere was not in the match day squad.
In the Chinese Super League, Joel Griffiths played a full match up front alongside Nicolas Anelka as Shanghai Shenhua drew 1-1 with Hangzhou.
Jonas Salley’s Shenxi defeated Mile Sterjovski’s Dalian Aerbin 3-1. Both players put in full shifts.
Milan Susak and Ryan Griffiths were unused substitutes as Tinajn Teda lost 2-1 to league leaders Guangzhou R&F.
In the Chinese second division, Brendon Santalab scored for the first time this season as his new club, Chongqing Lifan, drew 1-1 against Hohhot Dongjin.
