John Filan's dreams of finishing his career in his native Australia look to have been dashed.
The Wigan goalkeeper, 37, was hoping to find a top professional club when his contract ended in the summer at the JJB Stadium.
But he has been surprised to learn that the goalkeeping slots appear to have been filled in the eight-team Hyundai A-league.
Filan, who has returned to the Wigan side as Chris Kirkland and Mike Pollitt are injured, is set to face Fulham on Saturday.
He said: "I did think I would probably play back home but that looks as though it is not going to happen.
"There are a lack of opportunities with it only being a small league.
"They are operating a wage cap and clubs have already signed goalkeepers for next season.
"I am surprised as I thought there would be a position to go back to, either coaching or playing.
"It has not happened as yet, so we will just wait and see."
Filan is considering his options, which include the possibility of extending his stay in England.
He said: "If someone wants to come and talk to me I will listen. But I am geared to go home at the end of the season."
