The 32-year-old agreed terms on a three-year deal just three days after his departure from Fiorentina.

Liverani therefore returns to the club where he began his career as part of the Sicilian club's youth set-up in 1994.

"I return to Palermo after 14 years and I'm very happy," he told the club's official website.

"Back then the club wasn't going through good times, but today I find it in a totally different situation.

"There's a team that has established itself in the top flight and which has even taken part in the UEFA Cup, so I'm sure I made the right choice and have joined a top side."

Liverani left Fiorentina on Tuesday after the Viola were only willing to offer him a one-year extension to his contract in Florence.

He becomes the second player to join Palermo on Friday, after Antonio Nocerino arrived earlier in the day as part of the deal which took Brazilian forward Amauri to Juventus.

That deal looked to be stalling as reports claimed that the Italian midfielder was not keen on a move south.

But Nocerino insisted he always wanted to join the Rosanero.

"Were there ever any doubts? Absolutely not," he said.

"And if there ever were they completely disappeared when I came to the Barbera stadium a few months back with Juventus, and I knew then that this would be the best decision to take for my future."
